Baby Names

Weird Phenomenon

Nearly every toddler girl in my area (southern New England) is named Julianna (or Juliana).  I'm not even exaggerating.  I can't go to a store, playground, or even turn on the first birthday announcements on the local news without hearing this name.

The funny thing is that it is only ranked 179 on the SS list.  It feels like a name from the top 10.  I love this name, but I may have to move to another state to use it. Wink

Any names that you suspect are especially popular in your area?

  • I know 4 people who have named their baby Haden... 4 different spellings (Haydin, Haidyn, and Hayden) doesn't make it anymore you-neek!

  • Here it is any combo of these double names...Sarah/Anna/Emma/Ella with the second name Grace/Kate.

Also the name Addison is super popular.

  • Connor, Conor, Conner.

    Emma and Anna.

  • Hands down Milo. It's everywhere here (I'm in Ohio). I believe it ranked in the late 300's but I read somewhere that it's a hot name that will be climbing up the charts. So I guess I'm not too surprised.

Emma is ranked #1 for my state and it definitely is. Everyone knows at least two Emmas.

  • I know 4 or 5 people who have named their daughter Teagen/Taegen this year. Before that I never heard it before.

  • DS is in first grade but I was reading the kindergarten names, amoung the gems of Miracle, Navy and Quest (seriously) there were four Riley's, no clue if they are male or female since its just name tags.

  • A friend just named her daughter Juliana.  Abigail, Emma, Cayden (spelled 100 different ways for boys and girls) are ones I hear all the time in Oregon.
  • I know 3 Juliana's lol.

Names in my area that are popular? Isabella, Sophia & Olivia for girls and boys are the Kayden/Jayden/Brayden names.

    Wow, that's really bad!

Levi is sooo overdone in my area it's ridiculous, even though it ranks 66th on the SSA name list. Sophia and Isabella are also overly popular, but that's not much of a surprise since they are #1 and #2.

  • Olivia, hands down the most popular name around here right now. I'm sure my daughter will have about 5 Olivia's in her kindergarten class.

  • I'll be happy if I never meet another Sophia, Isabella, Emma, or Olivia again.... too bad, they are such pretty names!
  • Irish names are big here- especially with boys. Which is kind of a bummer for me since a lot of names I love are Irish (as are DH and I), but people keep using them!  For example, I have loved the name Aiden since I was a kid (it was the name of my cousins' neighbor in Ireland) but then it got way too popular.  Other popular names around here are: Liam, Brendan, Conor, Ryan and Owen.  Also, Emily.  Though not Irish, this is still a biggie in my neck of the woods.  Honestly four of my co-workers (in my department of about 12 people) have daughters named Emily, though they range in age from one year to twenty-two.

  • In my area, I hear a lot of Peytons and Emmas.   For boys, lots of Jacksons (and one Jaxsyn) and Liams.

I'm rather tired of those names.

  • My job takes me to a lot of schools around Chicago (mostly middle school age classrooms), so the names I notice are popular amongst 12-15 year old kids.

"Virtue" names like Faith, Honor, Destiny (lots of these), Cherish, etc. They are all over the place.

  • In my life every little boy is either William (Will/Liam/William) or Luke.  In my DD's preschool class of like 10 kids there are two Wills and two Lukes and every other one of my friends uses William or Luke as their baby name (at the very least, the middle name).

  • Based on my jr high classes, Jacob and Kaylee were apparently the number one names 13 years ago.  I have one in every single class.  Kaylee is spelled a variety of ways (Kali, Kaileigh and Kayle).  In my circle of baby friends I don't have any duplicates.  Although I have two friends in two different states that both named their daughters Aurora and call them Rory.

  • Jayden is so popular here for both male and female. I swear every other baby that is born is named Jayden. Jackson/Jaxon is also still super popular. I have also been hearing Juliet quite often. Apparently J names are the go to around here!

  • DD goes to a Catholic school in Salt Lake City, so it's kind of an unusual demographic in that most of the students are Catholics or non-Mormons living in a state where most people are Mormon and tend to give their kids...offbeat names.  There are two Leos in DD's kindergarten class.  There are two Evas she knows, one in pre-K and one in kindergarten.  Most of the other kids have fairly traditional names that aren't super trendy.

DS is named Lincoln, which is more popular in Utah (#26 in 2011) than in any other state, and I've met or heard of a few others.

My family and friends are mostly in or from Washington state, and among them I know several Benjamins, Joshuas, and Annas, among other biblical names.
