My DS is 22 months old and has been in cloth diapers since he was a newborn. I'm due November 22nd with DD, so originally, I was thinking we wouldn't worry about potty training until next spring. However, DS has been showing increasing interest in using the potty and yesterday asked at daycare to sit on the potty and peed in it for the first time. Again today, while changing his diaper he wanted to sit on the potty and peed in it again.
So, I am now wondering if maybe we should just go for it. I'd love to have only 1 in diapers! Also, I have read/heard that there's often times a "window of opportunity" where they show interest, but if you miss it, you may have to wait quite awhile before they are ready again. I'm considering maybe doing the 3-day method. Obviously, if he shows resistance, we'll just wait, but I want to know- am I crazy for considering trying to potty train before baby comes? Anybody have success stories of training a boy by age 2?
Re: Potty training advice needed...
Well, I don't have much advice for you, but I'm in a similar situation! My DS is 23 months and has been expressing some interest in using the toilet, telling me when he poops, etc. for the past month or two, but since they can't accommodate toilet training in the infant room at his DC, I had to wait. He's moving up to the 2s room on Monday where they do have toilets, and both teachers said to go for it with toilet training this weekend (both have kids of their own and have been working with 2s for a long time, so I trust their opinion).
I bought the "Toilet Training in Less than a day" book (knowing it will prob take much longer) and plan to start using that method tomorrow morning when DS wakes up. I've given him a new potty book after school each day this week to try to build enthusiasm and we've been watching the Elmo/Potty DVD. Today when I pick him up, we're going to go to Target and let him pick out a toilet seat, a TON of underwear, and a candy reward (i.e. M&Ms). I also ordered the "Potty Monkey" from Amazon and am going to use that as the training doll. I'll have to come back on Monday and give you an update to let you know how it goes.
The teachers said to just bring him in on Monday with underwear and 5-6 changes of clothes (# of diapers he usually goes through in a school day), and we'll just start off with "new room, new way to potty." We're only planning to work on daytime training for now, and if he starts to wake up dry, then we'll try nighttime training.
FYI- I asked for some advice in a post a few days ago (you may have to scroll back a bit) and I got some great advice. I also realized after I posted that there is a sub-board on this board (see the top)- toilet training forum that has some info too. Good luck to you!!!
I don't have much advice since we are just starting with the potty training. I say if your LO is expressing an interest in potty training, go for it. We aren't pushing it with DD and letting her set the pace.
DD is fascinated by the potty and toilet paper. When she asks to go, we have her go on the potty. Wiping and flushing are a huge thrill for her. We also cheer and give DD lots of hugs when she goes. If she doesn't go, we just say, "okay. we'll try again next time." I'm trying to avoid using food as a reward as long as possible. She goes every night before her bath, but we haven't pushed it beyond that. We are going to do the 3 day method, but give it 2 weeks when I'm off of work over winter break.
Give it a shot. Not much to lose, right?
Only downside is that since you're pregnant, there is no wine to help you get through the messy days.
