How early can you move from crib to toddler bed?

How early do you think I could move DD#1 to a toddler bed? She will be 15 months old when DD#2 comes along. DD#2 will probably be in a bassinet for the first 4 months. I'm thinking I might can avoid having two cribs if I can move DD#1 to a toddler bed somewhere around 18-20 months old. Is that too early?

It depends on the child and on you. For us yes way to early I use the crib as a safe place to leave my boys while I shower or other things. Plus ds would get up and roam the house if in a bed, he's 23 months now. I plan on leaving him in a crib until 3. Plus our cribs turn into toddler beds so I'd still need to buy something so we have two cribs.

Lurking here, but DD1 moved to a regular twin bed (w/ a rail added) at 17mo and we never had problems. If you have a kid that likes to get out of bed it could be frustrating however.

depends on the kid and family. DS1 was 13.5 months when we moved him to a twin bed and DS2 was 18 months when we moved him into a twin bed. They both did great and have never had issues. They have always slept 10-11 hours a night and napped just fine. Neither get out and roam the house. We actually shut their door but we shut all doors at night b/c fire safety says too. The big boys wait until their tot clock turns green then they will get out of bed and play in their room until we go get them.

We tried moving LO to a twin bed and after a few nights she wanted her "bed" back. We are going to wait until baby is a few months old and try again. We will have baby in the PNP until 15lbs.

Hi Jiffy!!!!

I keep pondering the same question. DD will be 17 months when #2 is born and I wanted to transition her before the baby comes. I was thinking around 15 months. I would have no problem buying another crib if DD stayed in her crib until 2-2.5yrs but I am afraid she will start climbing out at 18 months and it will be a total waste. What to do????

We moved DD at 321 months. DS will move out earlier. If the IVF works this round then he will be about 18 months. He will move into DDs room into a floor bed.

My daughter just turned 2 and she's still in her crib and doing super well. We just went and got another convertible crib. My daughter is the type that when the baby gets up during the night she will too and the last thing I need is her roaming around the house or banging on her door to get out at 3 am. I think it really depends on the child. Some are ready, some are not

DD was 15 months when we moved her, DS was 18 months. Had few problems with either after the first few days. Both went to regular twin beds with a rail.
