Parenting after a Loss

Advice on crib transition...

DD is STTN pretty much around 9pm to 6am and sleeps in her RnP in our room. She doesn't sleep good laying flat in her back so I'm hesitant to stop using the RnP yet. My plan is to put the RnP in her room for a lil to help her get used to her room then move her to her crib. My only concern is when she wakes up around 6amafter that feeding she immediately falls back asleep for another 3 to 4 hours. right now i hold her for about 15 to 20 min then put her in her RnP and have never had any issues with her spitting up. so my question is what do you do with your LOs after a middle of the night feeding since they should sit up for about a half hour after feedings? Should i still consider that 6am feeding a middle of the night feeding since she always goes back to sleep after that even tho she is sleeping 8 hours before? maybe i should wait to put her in her crib yet til she is sleeping longer and when she wakes up and isnt going right back to sleep after feeding. know I might have to prop her mattress up if she still won't sleep flat but I really dont know how I feel about that yet and just hope I don't need to.

Re: Advice on crib transition...

  • Is there a reason you are wanting to transition at <2 months?  It sounds like you are dealing with some reflux, and you're at the peak of when that is for most babies (often peaks at 6w and fades out by 12 or so).  Just thinking that what you are doing is working well for you if she's STTN and not refluxing after a feed.  If it ain't broke...

If you need to transition her, I'd switch the RNP to her room for a few nights.  Get her used to that.  Then make the switch to the crib, keeping as much other variables the same as you can (same jammies, same background noise).  She may do better if swaddled or if you lie a heating pad down in the crib before setting her in (remove it before you put her in!).  With my son, I found that setting him on flannel material sheets was less likely to wake him than on the regular kind (born in the fall, so it was chilly when we transitioned him in January @4 mos)

At that age my DS' reflux was at its worst.  He'd get held in a seated position on me for 30 mins after a feeding, regardless of what time it was.  Heck, sometimes I had to nurse him seated, which was interesting at that age.  Then I'd put him in the bassinet (we didn't have a RNP). If your child isn't refluxing, I wouldn't do the 30 min upright thing.

I would consider that 6am feeding a 'middle of the night' feeding if there are 3-4 hours of sleep after just nursing/bottle.  If your kid is sleeping 8-9 hours, waking just to feed and then sleeping 3-4 more hours...you probably aren't going to get her 'sleeping longer'.  That's like 12 hours of mostly continuous sleep.  Awesome at any age.

  • I would like to move her into the crib by the time I go back to work in 4 1/2 wks. I will take her being in the RnP in her room if anything. I know she eventually has to get out of it so I figured I would try before I go back to work. SIDS also freaks me out. I want her to continue her sleeping habits before I put her in the crib so hopefully it continues. I'm def grateful for the 12 hrs and don't mind the 6am feeding! Just hope it works for her when I go back to work and have to take her to the sitter in the mornings.

  • We did the transition to his crib before the 6 month mark as well.  Ended up being when he was 4 months.  My husband was sick with a bad cold (DS had just gotten over it) and was snoring badly.  His snoring would wake DS up, which in turn woke me up.  My getting up would then wake DH up.  Nobody was sleeping.

I just did it cold turkey (he was in a flat bassinet in our room before).  Once I figured out the sheet thing, it actually was easier to transition from rocker to crib (without fail he'd fall asleep before the 30 mins of staying upright was over).

She'll figure out a new pattern come time to go to the sitter.  They adjust, better than we do sometimes!

  • It's impossible for anyone to sleep like a baby if you've got a snorer in the house. Before you kick your husband out to the couch,  check out our video to find some useful tips on reducing snoring, which will hopefully help you ALL sleep better.
