DS has a weird bruise on his ear (inside, not tip). So of course it started to bug me as I can't recall a time he fell or hit it and I googled it. All the google hits were about child abuse and being boxed or pulled by the ear. DS goes to daycare, but we have never thought that anything was awry there and there have certainly never been any red flags. He easily goes to the provider, doesn't cry, and seems to be happily playing when I pick up. The provider has mentioned that he goes upstairs with her during nap time alone because he naps at different times then the other kids (and yes he does have a different schedule.) I don't know what to think. I am planning on call the pediatrician on Monday, but meanwhile am so worried/ confused. Am I just going google crazy? Tell me what you think/ would do please!
Re: What do you think?
One part of me wants to say it's entirely possible he could have bonked his ear while you (or someone at daycare) wasn't looking. Especially since he seems to be doing well with the providers when dropped off.
That being said... the mommy part of me would probably be concerned after reading the google results. Take pictures of any/all bruising on his body. While some babies at this stage have stranger danger/show fear against those who have hurt them, not all do. My baby is incredibly social and will still give smiles to people who he probably SHOULD be afraid of (eg- another kid who hit him multiple times who no longer is allowed to play with him ). They don't necessarily have that fear yet. I would call your doctor and see what he thinks and show him the pictures if necessary.
What color are the bruises? I have worked with an investigator in the children's unit for the police department when I was in college. The color of the bruising tells alot about the potential for abuse. If you see a couple different colors in the same area (not like transitioning to a different color..... more like completely different stages of brusing) then there is an increased likelihood it is abuse because the bruises happened in the same place at different times. Feel free to PM me with any questions and GL. I really hope it is nothing
Maybe another kid hit him with a toy by accident? That could have easily happened.
I'm sure you are worried, especially with those scary google search results. I think it's more likely for abuse to occur in an environment where it's 1:1 instead of a daycare setting. There are a lot of people around in those places (even if she takes him somewhere separate to nap).
Have you flat out asked the daycare provider what happened to his ear? Maybe they have a decent explanation.
This too
Hmm...I know in the state of Washington that if it's a licensed day care that you have to be within sight and sound of all children in your care at all times. My best friend used to run one and she couldn't go upstairs at all during the day while she had kids...not the question you asked but IMO if she's breaking that rule, it's always possible that there are other things going on. (Not too scare you!)
I would certainly photograph it, document it, question your provider on Monday and then once you have talked to her and your pedi then maybe look into a few other places, just in case. I would be watching like a hawk now though. I'm sorry you are having to deal with this at all though.
(I may sound like a paranoid freak, but I worked in childcare for several years and have seen things that would curl your toes. I'm just WAY overly cautious now.)
I'd take this route. I'd hate to know that I brushed something off if my LO was actually be mistreated. I'd rather seem slightly nutty & err on the side of caution.
Baby Boy #2 is on the way!
