XP: Breastmilk yogurt?

My daughter is 3 months old, and we have tried EVERYTHING to get her to take a bottle. She took one for about 2 weeks, and then quit. The issue that we have is that twice a week I am in class, and I am gone for about 4-5 hours. She has been holding out for me to get home, which would be fine if she was happy about it, but she isn't. I get home to a sad, hungry baby and a frustrated husband. I know that my daughter isn't old enough for solids yet (I was hoping to do BLW at 6mo), but I am wondering if I could make yogurt from my breastmilk to have my husband feed her.

I can't think of a reason why this is a bad idea, but I haven't heard of people doing this with babies so young, so maybe it isn't such a good idea.

What do you think?

Re: XP: Breastmilk yogurt?

  • I have no idea on the yogurt. If you think your daughter will eat yogurt off of a spoon your husband could try spoon feeding her regular breast milk. Sure it would be time consuming but he doesn't need to get an entire feeding into her, just enough to tide her over. This young though, she might still have the tongue thrust  reflex and that would make spoon feeding anything difficult.

Other ideas you could try are a syringe (like you would give medicine with) or a regular open cup.

    Good luck!

    What do you think?

Bacteria.  We have to be pretty cautious about sterilizing things like bottles, nipples etc.  Making yogurt is playing with bacteria and seems really risky.  Plus I wonder about what changes happen while making it that affect how it is digested.  But, I've said that before on another board and it seems like something you really want to do.  Is there somebody like a dietician you can talk to about it?  They might have a little more insight about it. (It's your business, definitely not mine, but the thought of it really makes me nervous)

I totally feel for you and your situation.  DD rejected the first couple of nipples we tried, and it was really upsetting to DH. Breastfeeding was one (of several) reasons that I postponed some coursework until next summer (plus it would have involved travelling with a newborn at the time, and having to be up all night with baby then go to class in the morning).  I know how stressful it can be.

I know a girl who worked out of the home and her husband brought her daughter to work so she could feed her.  Is that a possibility?  Maybe during a scheduled break?  I would also try gently letting her drink from a cup, using a medicine dropper, or possibly a straw.

  • Thanks. No, I do remember that you mentioned bacteria on the other post-- I honestly didn't realize that making yogurt was creating bacteria; I just thought that you were talking about the bacteria involved in getting it into her-- and I was thinking that she is potentially introduced to bacteria through bottle feeding, so why would spoon feeding be any different? However, since it seems as though yogurt is actually "playing with bacteria," it would mean introducing it directing into her stomach, which does indeed make me nervous, too. Thank you for the clarification.

Someone on another board suggested a straw cup as well; I think we are going to try that next.

  • Have you spoken to your local La Leche League leader about advice on getting her to take a bottle?  They are a wealth of knowledge and can either give you some good tips or they can point you to someone who can (a local LC).

But I agree with the pp, yogurt is made by using known and specific bacteria cultures to  milk to make it ferment.  I suspect it wouldn't be as easy on her gut as breastmilk.  I'd probably go to formula before I did yogurt or any other food.

  • I'm so relieved that you're going to try other things!  I know I don't know you, but I was concerned about it!  Good Luck! Smile
