Active with twins

Prior to August I was a runner 6 days a week then my dr had me only power walking since then I had been doing 4 miles! I got pregnant but stated bleeding so my ob hasn't let me walk in over a week and in starting to panic cause I wanna b active to have a healthy pregancy also I'm having twins!! So I gonna need to shed some weight!! So stressed please give me some advice!!!!!!

Re: Active with twins

  • Not bleeding overrides staying active. Sorry, mama. I think you should try to get over the weight thing now. You're going to get big, and your body is most likely not going to be the same after having twins.

  • I can understand how it feels to not be as active with a twin pregnancy, but having a "healthy" twin pregnancy is often different from what makes a singleton pregnancy healthy. The healthiest thing you can do is to follow your OB's advice about exercise because the last thing you want is preterm labor or other complications. And I assume you're joking about losing weight while pregnant. A twin pregnancy is all about gaining a certain amount of weight to support your baby's growth. You'll have plenty of time postpartum to shed weight.

  • I totally know how you feel.  I was active before my pregnancy as well, but have not been able to throughout the pregnancy.  But, I look at it as I will have two healthy babies in a few weeks and then I have the rest of my life to be active and chase them.  Plus, my husband has already said that he will watch the babies while I go for my runs.  So I am looking forward to that as my quiet time...just me and my ipod!  I don't know how far along you are, but I am at the point where I get worn out so quickly - everything is very tiring now.  So, I know it is going to take a lot of work to get back to being as fit as I was, but as a runner, we love challenges, right?

  • I was working out 5 days/week pre-pregnancy, in addition to long walks with my dog.  I started bleeding at 6 weeks and have bled on and off since then.  My docs have me on restricted activity until 16 weeks, but I will probably only walk after that time.  Honestly, I miss the exercise, but the constant bleeding scares the bejeezus out of me.  Right now, you need to do what's best for the babies and that's following doctor's orders.

  • if you're bleeding and you want to have a healthy pregnancy and baby you need to listen to your doctor and take it easy. Pushing yourself to stay "in shape" will not help the pregnancy. I too had bleeding while pregnant w/ my twins and it's hard but you have to take it easy!

  • Running should the least concern of yours right now!  Twin pregnancies are not the same as singletons.  I was a runner as well, but I had to stop soon after I found out we were having twins.  You will have lots of time later on to be active, but right now your only concern should be to follow your Dr.'s orders.  They are giving you those orders for a reason - having healthy babies is much, much more important than losing weight or running :-)
  • I'm not trying to loose weight I want to stay active! I am following doctors orders I'm just going crazy cause I'm used to working out 6 days a week! Thanks for all the advice!
  • I didn't exercise once while I was pregnant with my twins.  I only gained ~40 pounds and almost immediately lost it all after they were born.  Find a lazy hobby to fill your time and enjoy!!  :)

Ditto this. You can't follow other people's pregnancy exercise recommendations unless they're multiples-specific since it's just a different ballgame. You do have to be more cautious. If you're normal weight, you should look to gain about 37-54 lbs over the course of a twin pregnancy, especially trying to gain 20 lbs by 20 weeks/28 lbs by 28 weeks because steady gain like that over the first two trimesters is associated with better outcomes, better fetal birth weight, etc. (It can also be harder to gain in the third tri when your stomach is very squished by the babies!)

  • Can you find things to fill the time?  I know the lack of activity can suck.  I am used to my house being a certain kind of way.  Right now it is all being left up to DH cause I can't do it.  It is going to be hard to give up that addiction of yours but in the end you will be very happy you did.  You will also have two little travel buddies as you work out.
