Sinus Infection Remedies

I've got a nasty sinus infection.  And we all know they're going around.  Most of my usual go to remedies are out because of the sea monkey within.  What are some things you ladies use to get relief?

I've heard you can huff ...I mean... gently waft eucalyptus oil, but I read somewhere and I can't find it now that it may harm baby.  What's the truth with this, anyone know?

Re: Sinus Infection Remedies

  • Not sure about eucalyptus oil but I've had a nasty cold and the pharmacist recommended nasal spray and an antihistamine, I think the antihistamine is actually for allergies but it seems to be working.  She also said I can take tylenol but that was about all for my list of acceptable medications.  I've been drinking honey and hot water for my throat.  I hope you feel better soon, I'm just starting to feel better now and I came down with a cold on Monday :(

  • I personally find a few things in combination work for me.  First, half a lemon (squeezed and pulp scraped out), two tsp honey, and a dash of cayenne pepper in boiling water.  It's not delish, but it will help clear congestion.  I do that three times a day.  Second thing is two washcloths, dampened with as hot water as you can take, one placed on the back of your neck and on on your forehead.  Once they cool, alternate with cool (NOT COLD) washcloths in the same place.  If the congestion is still bad or you get a headache, you can also do hot steeped teabags under your eyes.  You'll look ridiculous, but it helps me.

Unfortunately, I'm an expert in sinus infections Sad

  • Don't underestimate the power of saline spray!  It will really help if you use it regularly.

You can also try cutting out dairy while your congestion clears.

Why dairy?  I've never heard of that.

Dairy aids mucous production, so it does more harm than good if you're stuffy.

  • I just got over a nasty sinus infection, totally miserable! I feel like I tried everything I could but nothing worked until I went to the Dr. and got a Z-pack. That knocked it out in no time and I'm finally the proud owner of two working nostrils again. Hope you feel better soon.

ETA: Some of the things I tried: nightly sinus rinse, peppermint tea, warm compresses, and rubbing a little of DD's Badger chest rub on my nose and upper lip before bed.

I learned something today.  I think I'm going to go make that crazy concoction.

  • I go back and forth between dry and stuffy. Saline spray has been my savior for my nose. The neti pot works okay when I'm stuffy, but I've been finding that I'm TOO stuffy for it to work. I'm also using a saline nasal gel at night. My doctor also suggested using a cool mist humidifier, so when we got the one we registered for, I broke it out for me to use. It's helped.

My doctor had told me I could take Allegra or Tylenol Sinus depending on the symptoms. I've taken both and neither really helped much at all.

  • I'm a HUGE fan of the neti pot - can take some time to get it to work if you are really congested, but once you are able to use it a few times a day, it's like magic.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • I've had this nasty cold hanging on for weeks now....I told dr yesterday and he gave me a script for Z-PAC hopefully I can get to feeling better. My advice talk to your dr being miserable sucks while pg.......
  • I finally got over a cold followed by sinus infection. My doc ok'd sudafed, so I took that at night (the really small ones, not the 12 hour - I would have been super-wired!) . I rinsed twice daily with the neti pot and slept sitting up (mostly). If I had nights where I really needed sleep, i used nasal spray on my left side nostril and slept on that side.

     Good luck!
