WDYD when LO is awake at night and fussing but not crying? How long is ok?

LO is 5 weeks old and at the beginning half of the night he nurses, falls asleep and I transfer him to the bassinet and he stays asleep. However, after about 3 am this no longer works. He fallsasleepafter I nurse him but anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes after I put him down he wakes up. At least, I think he is awake b/c he is grunting, kicking his legs and flailing his arms around. But his eyes are closed so I am not 100 percent sure but I think he must be awake b/c it seems a little too active to he active sleep. Anyhow, he is doing all that but not crying. So I am curious ... How long would you let that go on before stepping in to help get LO to sleep?

FYI I have tried holding him for 30 minutes before putting him down to make sure he is in a deep sleep, but that doesn't help he still wakesup. And we tried swaddling but he hates it and just screams until we free him.

  • We rock DD, pat her back, etc.

  • Did you just rock until they fell asleep?

  • I give her the pacifier and turn the white noise machine back on, and pat/rub her belly until she calms down and goes back to sleep - usually it takes no more than 5 minutes.

  • As long as she is not actually crying or sounding upset, I let DD do this for up to 15 min. She usually falls asleep after 5 to 10.

This! I think it's totally fine to leave them for a bit unless they are actually crying. Generally, DD will either fall back asleep or start crying within 5-10 minutes (usually falls back asleep), so now I just wait to see what she does.

Same here!  LO is a noisy sleeper so he has been in his room since night 3 of being home.  We let him fuss until he cries or falls asleep on his own.

  • ignore her until shes crying or seriously fussing. She fusses in her sleep soemtimes so we gotta wait for it to be real or we'd be up every 5 mins

  • If his eyes are closed and he isn't crying, I would let him be maybe give him a paci if he'll take it without waking up. Babies can be noisy and active sleepers! I also second trying a swaddle.

This is exactly what I do. I used to pick her up to feed her because I thought she was hungry. Once i started ignoring her fussing she started sleeping through the night, 10pm-8am.

  • Babies are noisy when they sleep (if his eyes are closed, he may well be asleep).  I'd just leave him be. He'll let you know of he needs you.

  • I completely understand where you are coming from. Our lo does this as his form of crying. His typical routine is:

    200 change/ feed/ burp
300 put lo back down in bassinet
400 you can almost time him starts grunting/ kicking/ flailing arms trying to break out of swaddling, and wants to get up for the day.

At that point i pick him up, change him he is always wet, and will not fall back to sleep of he is wet, and then sit on the couch, put him on my lap, with a blanket on top of us both, and snuggle him. Hes usually out within 510 mins. Hope this helps!
