LO has some jaundice and has been on home photo therapy this whole week. DH and i notice she is VERY sleepy and refuses to wake up at all when it comes to being fed every 3 hours.

how did you guys get your newborn to feed? we're getting so frustrated because she keeps losing weight :(

  • I agree with PP. That was the only thing that worked for LO. Made her VERY upset for a few seconds, she hates the cold. Usually had to keep it next to me during feeding because it didn't last long, but it worked every time. Good luck!

    Unswaddled her, stripped her down to diaper, and tickled her feet/hands when she would start nodding off. In the hospital I was having a hard time keeping her awake to feed and one of the nurses gave me this advice and followed it with, "Basically, just make her really upset." It worked!nbsp;

    We did the same thing with DS. He is jaundiced too and stripping him down to feed really worked.

    Yup, this worked for us, too.

  • I agree with the cold cloth. DS2 was in the NICU for jaundice and a fever of 101.4. His bilirubin levels went up for the first two days he was in there so when it was time to nurse, they would put him in my lap while on top of the bili blanket. With all of that, he would be nice and toasty so he kept falling asleep. It took both my FI and I during feedings to get through it...when DS2 would fall asleep, I would sit him up and my FI would have a cold cloth and make him uncomfortable. Sometimes feeding would take almost an hour because of how many times we would have to stop and stimulate him. Our NICU nurse suggested that I pump and give him a bottle at least once a night and that seemed to work for us. GL!
