Adoption

American Adoption? Adoption Network Law Center?

Phew....finally narrowed down our selection process of who to work with. We have one more attorney to speak with tomorrow, but our strongly leaning toward American Adoptions. The other contender is Adoption Law Center....although I think we are about to take them off the list.

If anyone has worked with either of these places,  I'd be very grateful to hear about your experiences!

Thank you!

  • Have you been able to find out the costs for American Adoptions? So far we've been looking at a local agency but I'm worried they might be too small.

  • Try googling Adoption Law Network Center (ANLC) reviews.  You may have to dig but you will find some very unhappy clients.

It's important to know that every organization will have unhappy clients but when you find the majority or reviews are scathingly bad, move on :)

If you do the same w/AA, I think you'll find mixed reviews but definitely more good than bad.  I know the one gripe I hear about AA is that they charge a lot up front (personally I got burned by an adoption org that did just that... so know that you can't really change your mind w/o losing lots of money).

If I were in your shoes, I would ax ANLC off my list.  AA is a good choice.  For a comparable org to ANLC but w/a very good reputation, look at AdoptHelp.

  • We used AA for our son's adoption and cannot say enough good about them. So my response will be biased and long.

We are also using them for second adoption in which we have already been presented 2 situations before being active though we are more open to hearing about certain drug usage.

Their fees for African American are considerably less than caucasian. I have mixed feelings about this practice but acknowledge despite not liking it adoption in general is one area in life where the mirror looking back from society is gross with every form of discrimination present and the reality being at the end of the day today's model is business oriented.

I'm not as familiar with their caucasian program and fees. For non Caucasian the match budget starts at around 19,500. Though you have a profile and video fee as well as activation fees that at min. would be around 24k total.

Matching then is not just based on your open factors, emom desires but also cost. So the lower your budget the likelihood that your wait may be longer than another couple with a higher budget. But it is all situational of what situations are coming in.

What you get for the money was superior for us. You pay for them having lawyers and SW in virtually all states, specific educated experts in individual areas an insurance experts, a homestudy expert that makes sure that everything is done and done right already been a time saver in our current adoption, birth parent case workers, adoptive family case workers etc. So many other agencies have fewer staff which is good for keeping costs low but not necessarily for efficiency and accuracy.

The fees are also higher due to increased advertising as well as their no risk practice. If a situation does not work out then you are not out money unless you already traveled then you are out the flight/hotel costs. Whole a disruption is sad it can be sad for the right reason and not angry about money that was a valuable element to me.

With DS we were home study complete and just finishing profile when we got the call he was born and needed parents. He was 100 healthy and no issues. They just didn't have any families open to full
AA. So we had no wait.

This time around I'm happy to say that more people are adopting AA but the wait is still low and again we may not officially activate with them as a higher cost situation that we are open to is being considered.

I'm sure there are people who have had a bad experience but in 4 years I have not met any of them.

So I guess biggest negative is the cost but if you went with a lower cost agency and the situation was disrupted and you lost money and had to start over then it might have worked better.

It all just depends on your situation and I'm sure that there are other gem agencies.

    Good luck!
