So I did my glucose tolerance test this morning. I didn't have to fast, which is great because I get pretty shaky if I don't eat first thing in the morning. I drank the horribly sugary drink within the 5 minutes I was alotted & sat in the waiting room for one hour without eating/drinking/walking around to wait to get my blood drawn. About 5 minutes before my hour was up I suddenly felt nauseated, got tunnel vision, sweaty and felt like I was going to pass out. I was about to call out for help when the lab tech called my name to get my blood drawn. I managed to walk to her booth despite my head spinning & told her that I was feeling pretty awful. She said that happens to some people after drinking the sugary stuff. Within a few minutes the dizziness stopped, but I still felt pretty gross & drove myself home. I drank lots of water today to try and flush the sugar out of my system.
Has anyone else had an experience like this with the glucose tolerance test? I felt like I was hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) even though I definitely had tons of sugar in my system. Weird...
Hoping that my results come back normal (I don't want to do the repeat 3hr test!)
Re: Bad experience with glucose tolerance test.. anyone else?
Yes! About 20 minutes after I drank the stuff, I felt very shaky and dizzy, almost like I was going to pass out. You are not alone! Hopefully our tests come back normal because I def do NOT want to do that again.
Good luck!

I had my GD test last week. I did have to fast and am jealous of all of you who didn't.
I live in Germany and glucose drink is not nearly as sickeningly sweet as in the US, thank goodness. I did have a period of time during that first hour of waiting where I felt a little strange. I was reading and my eyes felt odd...not sure how to describe it.
They do a 2 hour test here, but everything was started late and I had to leave at a certain time to get my kids from Kindergarten. Since my test after one hour hopped up on sugar was well within normal, my OB was all "get out of here, you're fine." It was really nice leaving the office with immediate results...don't know why more American OBs don't do it that way.
All I can say is that, I am glad I read this because I have no idea what to expect next week when I go in for the testing. Oh the joys of prenatal care and doctor vists... I hope everything turns out well for you, so that you do not have to go back a second time.
It could have been hypoglycemia. I have had a problem with that my whole life and sometimes after I eat sweet stuff my sugar will bottom out an hour or so later. I felt the same way after my glucose test and my sugar ended up being 67 after drinking it.
Mine is next week and I'm scared about how it will effect me. DH is taking the day off wit me to drive me there and home because I totally expect to feel like butt after.
Hope you get to feeling better later today.

A few years ago when I had to take this test I had a similar reaction. I got tunnel vision and very nauseated/dizzy. I walked up to the nurses desk and proceeded to not only faint, but vomit on the nurse. My heart went into an irregular rythym that required an observational EKG for 1 hour. Yeah- it was horrible. Sorry you had a similar experience. I later found out that I have reactive hypoglycemia.
Yes, but the phlebotomist was experienced with the test and told me what I could expect...including all of the symptoms you experienced. I have a weird condition called Vasovagal response, which is a crazy panic condition some people have with needles, or blood (or some other traumatic trigger), so I knew to be especially careful. It's not bad enough that I can faint because of it, I also go into violent convulsions (mimicking a seizure) and wake up soaked in sweat. I just get really embarrassed about it, and try to laugh it off, but I swear the ordeal traumatizes every poor nurse/dental assistant/surgical tech that has seen it. If I breathe deeply and continuously sip on ice water, it really seems to prevent it from happening, but I still have to warn everyone who draws my blood or starts an IV for me.
So yea, don't feel bad, at least you didn't pass out and flop around!
I'm a little late to this post but yes, I felt the same way. Completely sick and nauseous. I failed this time, but I felt the same way when I took it with DS, and that time I had passed.
When I took the 3 hour, which has double the sugar, I felt fine!

so about a half hour after the last blood draw today at a breakfast cafe, i got shaky, started sweating profusely and just felt...weird and kind of panicked. so i gobbled some gatorade chews i had in my car, ordered an orange juice and ate a pancake and felt almost immediately better. then of course, i was worried i ate too much sugar, so i made my husband go for a nice long walk with me, and i think things are ok but it was definitely scary. i've experienced hunger and shaking before but never the intense sweating and weird feelings in my body. so for the future, if i ever have to take it again, i will know to eat something IMMEDIATELY after the test. fingers crossed the tests come back normal.
