Parenting after a Loss

Septate uterus- any success stories?

Sorry in advance, this is my second post here in the last month looking for success stories. I hope that you ladies don't mind, I just got my RPL results back today and they weren't goodSad.

I'm hoping if any of you have been in my situation, you can share your happy ending experiences with me? Hopefully there are some.....?

Basically I had a mmc in May at 9 wks when LO was measuring 6 wks and a CP 3 weeks ago at 4 weeks.

My recent HSG discovered:

1) I have a broad based septate uterine

2) I have an abnormal right tube. Doc thinks my latest miscarriage( CP) could have caused this( ectopic) or there could be developmental distal ampullary atresia ( whatever that means). Or the ovarian cyst I had removed 4 years ago by Laparoscopy surgery could have damaged my tube. Basically my right tube is fu_cked and I can only get pregnant from my left.

Doc says I should get surgery to correct my septum and tube but waits here in Canada are ridiculous so the earliest I could get in would be late Dec/JanuarySad In the meantime he has left it up to us whether we want to ttc or tta. If we ttc, we have to be ok with potentially having another m/c OR there could be a chance we could have a normal healthy pregnancy as doc told us there are women who have septate uteruses and can still conceive and have no problems ( not sure the statistics on this).

Do any of you ladies have a septate uterus and conceived a healthy baby? Anyone have the surgery to remove it or fix a tubal abnormality and go on to have a baby? Any success stories out there? I need some hope right now, feeling so disheartened!

Big thanks for any replies! Congrats to all you ladies on your rainbow babies, hopefully I'll be joining you all one day instead of pestering you all for success stories! ( again, hopefully no one minds me posting here)

Re: Septate uterus- any success stories?

  • If you add mild MF (male factor), our DXs are similar... I lost my left tube to an ectopic (so nothing to correct there) and I had a "mild to moderate" broadbase (fundal) septum surgically corrected --- oh, yeah, had a minor ovarian cyst removed (along with minor fibroid).  DH took supplements for his mild to moderate conditions. The dr's considered us "unexplained" because none of our issues were severe, so "try, try again" should have worked.  After my surgery and DH's treatment, we could have TTC'd naturally anew but after so many years and heartbreak we did IVF with PGS immediately.  It worked for us!!!

Thanks so much for replying!! Wow we do have a similar DX. My septum is also diagnosed as a broad based septum although I'm still trying to figure out what the "broad based" means. I've been googling and googling and not much is coming up. I'm reading mixed things on septums though, some say they aren't as severe as some of the other abnormalities of uteruses and some say it contributes to the highest miscarriage rate at 90%.*sigh*

I'm so glad that everything worked out for you were able to have your rainbow baby!!! Hopefully the surgery will work for me too!Smile

  • I had a small septum removed and while we don't know that it actually casused any of my 3 m/cs I'm glad that it was removed so I know that isn't a cause should I, God forbid, have any more m/cs. Mine were more likely caused from my blood clotting disorders. Good luck to you!

Thanks so much for sharing your story, its good to hear another positive outcome from someone who's had the surgery! Looks like after this cycle we're going to tta for now and get the LAP. From what I've seen online, it could increase are chances of a succesful pregnancy from 20% to 80%. At least if its removed, we'll know that the septum wouldn't be the cause of any more miscarriages if like you said, god forbid that was ever to happen againIndifferent Ahhh so much to think about! Thanks again for your reply, I truly appreciate it and congrats on your rainbow baby!!!

  • I had a septum.  I had it removed in June of 2009.  It sounds like you decided to TTA until you have the surgery, which is a very good thing.  Unfortunately many doctors are not very knowledgeable when it comes to septums and other uterine abnormalities.  The stats about 90% risk of PL with a septum are true.  It is very rare to have a septum and have a normal, term pregnancy.  I found out about mine because I got pregnant and ended up losing my first daughter at 27w.  She had severe IUGR because she just had no room in there thanks to the septum.  After I had the surgery I waited 3 months per my doc, then I was able to go on to have two healthy children.  Good luck to you.  I hope you get the surgery and then go on to have your sticky baby.

We are definitely going to TTA but I found out this cycle at 10 dpo about my septum and tube so now for once Im freaked out and hoping I'm not pregnant.Indifferent

Thanks for sharing your story with me, its so comforting to hear there can be success with the surgery! Lees xx

  • I have a septate uterus (as well as a vaginal septum). I also have a perfect and healthy almost 8 year old daughter. They found the uterine septum during my first sono, and the vaginal septum during my c-section.

I saw a high risk specialist shortly after they found it, and he told me I'd be lucky to carry her to viability. I also developed pregnancy-induced high blood pressure shortly after the septum was discovered.

My daughter was stuck breech on the right side. You could see her head sticking out of my side most days. I was due on December 24th, but due to my BP they did amnio on Dec. 1st and I had a c-section on Dec. 2nd. The doctor had hoped to remove the septum during my c-section, but found it was too thick and the risk of bleeding out was too great. They don't plan to remove it unless I have multiple miscarriages. Since I was only 20 when they gave me all of the information, it sort of went in one ear and out the other, so I'm not sure what other information I can give you. My doctor did tell me that it's a complete crap shoot. Some carry all the way to term, and others continuously miscarry.

My husband (not the father of my daughter) and I are finally ready to have a baby (began trying last week), but I'm terrified. Septums create a lot of uncertainty, and worst of all, a lot of stress. They say ignorance is bliss, and during my first pregnancy, I didn't realize how incredibly lucky I am. Over the last few months I have done a lot of research, and I'm getting more and more concerned. If I could, I would do the surgery before conceiving. I can't imagine a miscarriage. It consumes my every waking thought, but I'm one of the lucky ones. I have a beautiful little girl who makes me smile every day.

    Good luck to you!

  • I have a septum in my uterus, my midwives did not think my baby was going to make it this far because it was the worst septum they had seen. One of them actually wanted to transfer me out to a more specialized practice.

They have been monitoring me very closely from the beginning and so far everything has gone smoothly, despite the presence of the septum. I'm 34 weeks and so far the only issue is that my baby is stuck in one position, and it's a breech position.

We got really lucky with this pregnancy, because my baby and his placenta did not implant on the septum.

I will see my midwife again next week and she will schedule a time for me to meet with a surgeon so that they can schedule a C-section at 39 weeks.

I will let you all know how things continue to progress...
