Holiday shopping. What are you going to buy?

I know Nora is only one, but I want to get her at least one thing.  I thing we plan to get her something for the outdoors, like a wagon, since her birthday won't be until after the next warm season.  What do you ladies plan to do?  I also have no idea what I'm going to get for my SD.  She is going to be 10 soon, so it's a difficult age to buy for.  She's too old for a lot of things but not old enough for other things.

Re: Holiday shopping. What are you going to buy?

  • I know American Girl stuff can be $$ but that was about the age I got into it. Does she have any activities/hobbies you can get supplies for?

I have zero ideas for DS so I m really looking forward to reading these answers!

  • A wagon is a good idea- I have one on my wishlist on amazon.  I havent thought about Christmas shopping yet..  We will probably try to stay low key for DD this year.  I have a pile of her birthday presents that I still haven't put away or let her play with.  She has too much stuff as it is.

As far as SD goes, what about games (like board games), art/craft projects, music, movie gift cards, clothes, books, a digital camera (you can get them pretty cheap these days), smelly lotions, date night with her dad (dinner gift card, movie gift card or putt putt or something like that), cute gloves/winter hat/scarf....

  • His big present is the cook and grow kitchen. I'm going to get him a few little people things, puzzles and stuff like that. Some he won't have an interest in for a while, but that's okay.

Some of the bigger items we considered for LO for Christmas are sandbox, nice toy box (something that can be used his whole life for other things - for example, I have one that I now use in our bedroom to hold bedding and such), a swing set, a climber, a wagon, etc. We went with the climber for his birthday. We are not sure which we will go with for Christmas just yet.

    Which climber did you get?

E got this for her birthday and she LOVES it. She plays with it all day long.

She also got the Little People farm and she LOVES that too. I am a big fan of Little People and we will definitely be getting her more of them for Christmas.  So far on her list, I have a wagon, Little People, books, maybe a Mr. Potato Head, maybe some big legos.

  • I think I would like to get DD either a kitchen, or a water/sand table. I also would like to get her a tricycle, but that may be a better birthday gift for next year.I am also thinking about an easel and some art supplies (crayons/markers).

For your 10 year old DD, what about a gift card to the mall. That was she can go to whatever store she wants and get whatever she wants. Also, what about giving her an IOU for a night/day out with you and DH. You could go to a show and dinner, or take her to a museum and an IMAX, or something like that. When I was 11 my mom took me to phantom of the opera and a fancy dinner and I loved it.

  • For LBB we're getting him a Rockabye Rocker and a little trampoline as his big gifts.

For your SD, my neice is 12 and we usually get her arts & crafts gifts.  One of her favorites was a silk-screening kit, which we got her last year.

  • For your SD, what about giving her homemade coupons for different activities to do with you guys? Maybe some that involve Nora and the whole family, and some that only involve doing stuff with you and your SO and her. My friend did that for her SD because she didn't know what to get her and her SD loved it. That did coupons for days with her little brother like going out for ice cream, going to the park...pretty much anything you can bring a baby along. And then she had coupons for special days without her little brother like bowling, ski lessons, movie. And other coupons where she could take one parent and she got to chose who she wanted to take with her to go putt putt golfing, on a bike ride, ice skating, mani and pedi, etc....that way they didn't have to get a sitter. The coupons were each listed that they could be used in separate months so she couldn't use them all at once. But she did it as a last minute gift because she couldn't figure out what to get her but her SD loved it so much she is doing it again this year. She said she didn't want SD to feel like they loved her brother more because he was theirs and she was only biologically her dads. And since there was a huge age gap, she said SD loved that they did stuff without the baby sometimes. When it came to picking an adult for the "one parent" coupons, she always picked her dad at first but then started picking my friend and they started forming a better bond.

you and btsrc5 have good idea for my SD.  Her birthday is also in December, so it's always a difficult task to somehow separate the two and not spend a ridiculous amount of money in the process.

I'm sure Nora would love a kitchen set or a swing set too.  I think we may get her something to go outside.

  • We are getting DS some sort of ride of toy but we are not sure which one yet. I asked about presents last weekend and one person mentioned a toy box which is something we desperately need so that will be on the list too. I do not have his list that I made with me right now but we are trying to keep the toys to a minimum and supply him with things he could really use such as plates, forks, and toddler cups, socks, 2T jacket and sweatshirts bathtub mat...things like that.

My niece is 10 yo and loves Monster High stuff right now.  I got her some monster High socks so far for Christmas, but for her birthday she got the dolls, an art set, and a poster that was Monster High. She is also into really elegant dresses and anything animal print. Stuff for winter may be nice too. I got her a pair of faux UGGs last year.

DS just got a ride on toy for his birthday and we love it!! He got the Fisher Price Rock, Roll and Ride Trike. We love that he can use it as a rocker inside through the winter also. He has been obsessed with it since he got it this weekend. It is also not too expensive!!

  • When I was your SD's age I loved getting cute stationery for writing to my penpals...or is it all by email these days? I also had a book on how to make popup greeting cards that was pretty neat. Origami, too.

  • I think that the ladies on here had great suggestions for your SD.

We're making Lily a DIY play kitchen out of an entertainment unit.  I figure we'll tell the grandparents that they can get her the accessories to go with it (food, dishes, pots and pan, etc.).  That will be her big present.  Growing up, my parents always gave us a little present for the first 7 nights of Hannukah and then one big present on the last night.  The 7 little presents will be for things like clothes/socks, a yummy treat, a new small stuffed animal, that kind of thing.
