December 2011 Moms

Hello Ladies - Imiss you and a ?

I haven't seen you girls in ages. How is everyone doing??? How are those fabulous babies?? L is huge LOL. I have a question that I can only trust my other December mamas to help with.

Check up today at 10 months and her stats were

Height 30 1/2 inches (100%)

Weight 24lbs 4 oz (100%)

She's a terribly cute big girl, but I have a question. She is so long that I have to straighten her legs and put them up the back of my car's back seat. She is super uncomfortable because she needs at least another 4 inches of space to sit without having her legs up the back of the back seat. When I spoke to her doctor, he came out to the car to see her in the seat. He recommended that we either turn her around (forward facing) or buy a carseat that will better accommodate her long legs (he said that we could look, but he didn't think we'd be able to find anything that would fit those legs). He said that it is safer to turn her around than to have an accident with her legs stretched up the back seat. I have been to BRU to try other baby seats, and because of her legs, they pretty much all have the same issue. I don't know what to do. I don't want to turn her around, but honestly, the way she is sitting is not only uncomfortable, but I truly believe that if I have an accident her legs will break even in a fender bender. What would you girls do?

If you made it this far, you deserve to see the cheeks ::P

  • Our daughter was 28 inches a week or so ago. She is rear facing, and will likely remain up to 45 pounds. She sits with her legs crossed or in the frog-sit position.

  • She is absolutely safer rear facing, even with her legs crossed.  She doesn't know any different so keep her that way as long as possible.  In Europe the standard is RF till they are 3 or 4.  So I imagine if their children survive, so will ours.

  • DS is 29 inches. We have him in the Graco Smart Seat. Since this convertible car seat has a base it keeps it a few inches from the back of the seat. So he's no where near in an uncomfortable position.

Even if he was though I think of it this way.... If we were in a car wreck I'd much rather deal with broken legs than a broke neck. He'll be rear facing for at least another year.

  • Hi CamJack! L is adorable!

I personally would much rather deal with broken legs than something worse that could happen if DS is FFed too soon. I would keep that precious girl RFing as long as you can! A baby's spine isn't strong enough at this age to withstand the impact of a crash FFing. RFing is sooooo much safer, even if it does result in broken legs.

I was just going to say! She can cross her legs. A broken leg is much better than a neck injury from being put forward to early.

  • My older daughter sat RFing until age 2 and she's tall (90%). She would either cross her legs or put them over the sides of the car seat. My little one will RF until age 2 as well. It's just so much safer.

  • I'm not sure why you're straightening her legs up the back of the seat. It's much safer for her to be RF with crossed or bent legs than FF with straight ones.

  • Hey there! I have nothing to add about the car seat, but wanted to say hello! I love the picture of L. Are you teaching this year? Great to see you around this humble board!

ETA: My LO is also over 30 inches and we have a Britax Boulevard. We have not had any legroom issues. Could it be your car maybe? I don't know!

  • I updated on parenting, but wanted tell you lovely ladies as well.

First off, thanks for the compliments, and you miss you guys as well (awww I feel so loved LOL)

Second, my doc had me come back into the office and had a professional come in and check the seat. It appears that my Chevy Traverse's raised  middle seat was causing the issue. He reinstalled the seat on one of the sides and baby girl is once again happy and safely rear facing.

    You guys are awesome.
