gas pain

my 4 week old LO seems to have horrible gas pain, mostly at night, but sometimes throughout the day. i burp him after each breast but can't always get a burp. any suggestions on how to help him or is this just something that will get better in time? i feel so bad when he kicking his legs, grunting, and crying. i feel helpless!!!!! and it takes me forever to get him to sleep at 3am.

  • I'm going through this too at night with my 2 week old.  It's getting really hard to burp him after some feedings.  As long as I can get a burp out, he seems to be ok.  But I don't know how to get a burp out when he just keeps screaming and it won't come up!

  • My LO has had this since about 3 weeks... mostly during the day though. At night he sleeps soundly between feedings.

  • I just saw my ped about this. She said to change my diet (I'm BF). She said to eat bland foods, no raw veggies, garlic, soy, or dairy. This change doesn't have to be eternal, just until LO's digestive track matures more. For FF she said there are formulas that will do this too. Not looking forward to swapping out my salads at lunch but what are you gonna do?
  • My 6 week old has been dealing with this since week 3. I tried gripe water and milicon drops. Gripe water did nothing so then I tried the milicon drops. I also took dairy out of my diet completely two weeks ago in case she has a milk allergy. I am not sure what did what but so far she is doing better. She still has trouble with gas every now and then but compared to before its way better. Their digestive system is not mature yet so unfortunately you are going to have to deal with it until around 3 months of age. I know, it sucks! You can try doing bicycle kicks and also put him on his tummy. Sometimes when I do tummy time with my LO as soon as I put her on her tummy she lets out a big toot lol

I just saw my pedi. abt this today as well and she said that unless there were other concerning symptoms, like blood in stools, that there is no need to eliminate any foods.

OMG this made me laugh so hard!! But then again, my LO finds it easier to poop when he's on his tummy. Babies are strange gassy creatures LOL
  • It has improved for DS as he is getting older.  We gave him gas drops when he acted like your LO.  I don't know how much they actually helped with the gas, but DS liked the taste and he would calm down right away.  Tummy time helped him eliminate the gas, too.

That's what our pedi said too. YouTube colic massage. It's amazing. We still have gas issues, but I really think its helping!
