Stopping at 1?

If this has been posted about previously, let me know.  Haven't been on here in months.

Is anyone else here stopping at 1 child?  I am considering it.  Not because I had a difficult pregnancy, not because I don't think I can afford it.

I grew up with two siblings and they are my best friends, but I'm really not convinced I want to have another baby. I know it's early, and maybe I'll change my mind.

Re: Stopping at 1?

  • We might... I love being a mom, and would love another, but it might not happen. It cost about 7k to conceive L. I'm not on BC now, but will be once I stop BFing to control my PCOS. If I get KU before then it'll be a miracle and we'd feel blessed. If not another baby would cost us more treatments with the RE which is pricey. Plus I'd be scared of twins, so I'm not sure we could do it...

  • I am leaning towards more but I just don't know. How can I possibly find the time for another? I know it's possible but I just don't know how! If we do decide to have another one it wouldn't be for another 3 or four years so we have time to figure it out.

  • I am scared to have another because Macy is so easy. She's a great sleeper and super happy all the time. I feel like having another one would push my luck!

  • I was just starting to consider #3.  I really wanted a girl, but even another boy would be a blessing.  Then I looked at my bank account.  I can barely afford two kids in daycare, let alone three.  And the option to stay at home then? Only if I don't want a home to live in, since my paycheck is what pays the mortgage and daycare.

  • I definitely want more. However I don't know how we will afford it? Daycare is almost $1600 for 1 baby, I don't make enough to pay twice that in daycare and my commute costs, etc.

However we also can't survive on one salary, at least not easily.

So I'm not sure what to do.I feel like people have more than one child all the time, but looking at the numbers I'd be going to work for $0. And I have a good job, I make a good salary I think. And I don't want to be a SAH mom, I like my job...

  • I'd like to stop at one. I'm happy with our one perfect little girl and don't want to tempt fate. My husband insists he wants another though, so who knows. He may be able to talk me into doing it all again.

Keep in mind that daycare costs typically go down as the child gets older higher ratio of kids to teachers, so while our infant is 1500/mo, our 3 year old is under 1000. Its still a huge chunk of change, but not quite double the infant rate. Also, you'll only be paying for daycare/preschool for 5 years or so, then theoretically the childcare costs go down. Of course then you get into other activities that are too! Sports, camps, before/after school care, colllege saving, etc etc, etc!. Kids are , but totally worth it!

Also, I always knew I wanted at least 2 kids, but my DS was WELL over a year before I was ready to actually think about pregnancy and another newborn in the house! Its been MUCH easier the second time around!

  • We always thought we wanted 2-3, but are contemplating stopping at 1 now.  E has been a handful and we just really don't know if we can take the chance of having another high maintenance baby in a couple years.  She has had so many tummy issues and sleep issues...we are exhausted :(  And I hated pregnancy too.  Man, I sound like a Debbie Downer.  We are thinking this now, but I can see us changing our minds in a couple years.  I think it would be lonely to be an only child.
