Exhausted doesn't even cover it...

So Ds has been battling a cold for the last week.  I haven't thought much about it, because he goes to daycare, and it's cold and flu season.  We've never had too much respirtory (sp) issues other than occassional breathing treatments with Albuterol.  Last night, ds was coughing when we put him to bed, but I figured it was just going to be a normal night.

I thought wrong.

He came into our at room at 1am wheezing really hard, with a coughing with a barking cough.  First thought that came to our minds was whooping cough, but I know he is up to date with his vaccinations, including pertussis.  So off to the ER we go.  The RN first looked at him, and after hearing the cough was pretty sure it was Croup.  Then the doctor comes in and asks us some questions and examines him.  The verdict is Croup, so he was given an oral steroid at the hospital, and we spent an hour trying to get him to take the cold mist humidifier treatment that the RT set up.  Finally by 3:30am, we were released, but we had to stop off at Wal-Mart to buy a new filter for our cold mist humidifier.

Needless to say, I'm running on about 3 hours of sleep and am exhausted.  I pray ds has a good night tonight.  Last night was awful.  And the cherry on the top was, my mom was supposed to watch ds overnight tomorrow night so dh and I could have a date night, and then pick him up on Sunday.  That is now canceled.

Ugh!

  • We had the same thing about 6 months ago.  It was so scary.  Good news isnthatmitbwent away pretty quickly.  Now anytime Adam gets the slightest croupy cough I head start to the pedi for a steriods shot.  It was terrifying how quickly the cough turned into difficulty breathing.

  • If he starts barking tonight take him outside if the weather is cold or into a steamy bathroom.  Both will help calm the cough down and let him rest better.  Also popsicles seem to cure everything;)  Hope he gets better soon for both your sakes.
  • oh one dr said if we were at home and she really wasn't breathing well to stick her head in the freezer lol to help open her up.

  • First time with Croup was the scary!

Now, at night it means sitting in the steamy showered bathroom for a bit, and then sleeping with a cool mist humidifier...then off to the morning pedi for meds.
