Any recommendations on helping LO to roll over?

DD is 5.5 months and not rolling over in either direction.  She can go from her back on to her side (as this is how she loves to sleep), but other then that makes no attempt to roll from back to belly or belly to back.  At her 5mo appt, the Dr. said we need to do a lot more tummy time with her.  She hates tummy time but we have been doing it a lot more.  I try to lay on floor too, show her toys, whatever I can to make it enjoyable.  She just flails around looking like a fish out of water.  She doesn't grasp the concept of putting her hands on the floor to use as leverage, it's almost as if she is afraid to have her hands touch the floor.  I also try to "show" her how if she puts her hands on the floor kind of underneath her she can then roll over very easily.

Any tips on working on rolling over/tummy time are much appreciated.

Thanks!

Jessica

  • I have no tips because my LO now does the same thing!  She rolled a lot around 4 months and like forgot, and now just flails around when she is on her tummy and cries.

It actually started when she learned how to sit, now that is all she wants to do and doesn't like laying on her belly or back.

  • At 4.5 months Miss H hadn't rolled over either. My sister (overbearing mother of three) was convinced she should be...so FTM over here bought her a tummy time mat...fail...it didn't help and she didn't like it...money I'll never get back...

So finally we laid her on her belly naked on a blanket on the floor...it took her a while and an outburst but she did it!! Then she could stop always tummy to back.

Now at 6 months 2 weeks, she forgets how to go from tummy to back and always ends up on her tummy!!

  • At 7m, Micah still can't go from tummy to back unless he was holding his arm under himself the whole time. He didn't really roll from back to tummy until the 6m mark. He didn't regularly roll around until 6.5 months.

I know daycare gives him tummy time every day, so I think that's helping. When we do it, we give him a few fuss minutes and then move on. He still hates to be on his tummy. I don't blame him. I wouldn't want to lay on my tummy either.

  • Luke isn't rolling either. Between 3-4 months he rolled about 5 times from tummy to back but hasn't since. He's never rolled from back to tummy. He can sit indpendently but when laying flat he just kicks his feet or swims... he doesnt go anywhere.

I worry about it but I know everyone does things at their own pace. He will be 6 months next week

  • When Macy was getting to the point where she'd get stuck on her side, we stacked a couple blankets on top of each other on the bed and spread out a blanket on top of all of them so it was like a tiny ramp. (Seriously tiny incline, not talking about rolling her down a big ramp or anything!) I would lay her on top of the stack and she'd kind of roll down the slope. It helped get gravity on her side kind of so she got the hang of it. She still rarely rolls onto her tummy though, she just prefers to be on her back. If I put her on her tummy she rolls right to her back.

  • To teach V how to roll from back to belly, we'd place her on her back and show her a toy over her face. Then we'd move the toy to the side and up so she'd sort of turn and wrench her head and neck back. Then we'd help her move the rest of her body over. This is probably a really bad explanation. I hope it makes sense!

She started rolling belly to back early on when she despised tummy time and would do anything to get out of it.

In other news, she doesn't sit yet. So, I guess every baby really just moves at their own pace.
