C-sections

question?

My last pregnancy I had a HORRIBLE vaginal birth experience I ripped horribly 4th degree to be exact. My blood pressure dropped super low and Ethan's heart rate stopped due to the cord being around his neck. I pushed for two hours and was in labor for over 30. It was not a enjoyable peaceful experience. Dont get me wrong I know birth isnt fun but I wanted to be able to take in each moment and did not get that. I was in pain for months after words and had to carry a pillow to sit on everywhere I went for 4 months. My question is I am debating talking to my doctor this go round ( which is a different doc as we now live in a new state) about doing a c-section while I know that isnt fun either at least a have a semi idea what to expect versus having a vaginal birth and possibly tearing again. I am not saying a c-section couldnt come with its own set of problems I am just hoping I wont have the experience I had last go round.

Re: question?

  • I elected for my C/S and have NO regrets.  Recovery was a breeze.  The worst part was the anticipation.  Do what you feel is right for your body and don't let anyone talk down to you for it once your decision is made.

AMEN!!! I couldnt have said it better myself. i chose elective c-section and I dont regret at ALL. I felt great at about 2 weeks out. The worst part is DEFINITELY the anticipation. I commend elective c-sections 100000000%!

  • My c/s recoveries were both exponentially easier than it sounds like your recovery from vaginal birth was.  I felt about 90% back to normal by a week PP and had no long-term physical effects either time (other than the scar, obviously, which I don't mind).  I think it's perfectly reasonable for you to choose a c/s this time around.

  • my c/s was after pushing for 3.5 hours with NO progress and I was wanting a c/s at that point just to get relief.  Next time i'm going in for a scheduled c/s without a doubt.  If I had the experience you did, I'm sure I would do the same

  • C/S recovery isn't always a breeze, as some PPs would have you think. My incision opened up and became infected 2x. It didn't fully close until well after 10 weeks PP. You can't go up and down stairs, it hurts to get out of bed, LO will kick the crap out of your incision during feedings...you can't sweep, mop, or vacuum. You can't pick up your other child, either. Just keep those things in mind.

  • Like PP said, do what is right for you. My c-sections was easy and quick, you take all of the wondering out of it and I feel that since this would be your first c-section you have very few risk of complications.

Me too. I am having a RCS this time around. My recovery was so much easier than several of my friends who had birth stories similar to yours.

  • I personally do not recommend c-sections, BUT I had a not-so-great experience. I had to be induced 10 days past my due date, labored for a few hours before I easily got to 10 cm...great, right? Then I pushed for 4 1/2 hours and got absolutely nowhere so I ended with an unplanned c-section. I partially blame getting induced, but baby was so late it was sort of necessary and my doc wouldn't let me go longer. Top it off with a 9 1/2 lb baby. My recovery was terrible...I was in so much pain and was miserable, and I was in tip top shape so it sort of surprised me how rough it was to recover. I have *heard* that it's the unplanned c's that are rough. It seems like planned ones are much easier, according to pp's above!

With a future pregnancy, I would like to try for a VBAC if I'm a good candidate but at the same time, I don't want to go through what I went through last time again and would rather have a planned C if I have to have one. Anyway, I've rambled...it sounds like your experience was definitely rough with the vaginal birth! Maybe you can wait to find out if you're having a boy vs. girl, see how big they are, etc. before you make your decision?
