Eye and face twitchingwwyd?!

DD 4 yrs has developed an eye twitch within the last week in both eyes and will scrunch up her lips and nose while twitching eyes. It's all day long and worse when she doesn't nap, which is a lot lately. She has started trying to take in deep breaths too within the past few days, this is often with the twitching. We are having some issues with DS 7 months and think we finally have it figured out thought he had reflux and food sensitivities but nothing was working, looks like his tongue tie that was clipped at 10 days may have reattached and a lip tie is causing a lot of issues for him. This has caused a lot of stress for the last 7 months in trying to get things figured out but I didn't think it was enough to effect DD like this. There has been a lot of change and exciting things going on for her lately too which she has always been sensitive to

I plan to let her pedi know but do you think ignoring it is enough to make the twitching go away and try to keep things very calm at home? Or does this seem more serious?

Re: Eye and face twitchingwwyd?!

  • My DD developed a twitch at 3 and I mentioned it to her pedi because my brother has Tourette's, so I was pretty paranoid. He said it's quite common on preschooolers and they usually grow out of it. DD has, by the way.

Mention it to the pedi, but try not to stress about it.

  • How long did it take your DD to grow out of it? It's just that she does it constantly throughout the day it's a little embarrassing to be honest.

It took a good year or so. It was more obvious when she was tired. We did try to encourage her to try not to do it, but if she can't control it, stressing about it makes it worse.

Mention it to your doctor, but mine told me they won't do anything that young unless they suspect a neurological problem. If people comment on it in public, just tell them it's perfectly normal.

  • My son has an eye tic. It is very noticeable when he is tired or stressed. It has gotten better over the last year and a half. But his pedi said tics are commom in this age group too. His eyes also tend to get dry, so we use eye drops.. but we don't mention the tic, or ask him to stop.

  • DS1 had something similiar with his little brother was born. We put him in front of a mirror and told him when he was doing it and told him to stop. He soon forgot about it and it went away.

  • DD developed a very deliberate eye blinking tic around age 3.  Her pedi said to ignore it.  It only lasted a week or so.
