Help me decide - Strollers

Ok, so I know exactly what I want - it just doesn't seem to exist (at least not in Canada).  I would like a compact, lightweight stroller (i.e. umbrella style), that can handle some level of terrain (i.e. snowy/slushy parking lots, grass at parks, bike trails), and can be used as a travel system.  All for around $300 ish (including infant car seat).  Is that really too much to ask?

Options I've seen are the Britax B-Nimble/B-Safe combo (above preferred price), Cybex Onyx with cheaper car-seat (not sure about terrain and quality of car-seat, likely still above where I want to spend), Lamaz Indigo Travel System (not umbrella, concerns about stroller quality), and The First Years Wisp Travel System (very affordable, concerns about quality, and just not my fav).

Am I missing any other decent options out there? Or any feedback on the above options?

Since, I'm beginning to think I'll not be able able to get everything thing all at once... then the debate becomes - do I just get an affordable travel system (i.e. $250), and buy an compact stroller down the road (still concerned about lack of terrain ability)?

I also do jog, but not convinced I'll want to jog with baby.  Since by the time LO is old enough to ride in stroller, it will be cold here.  But if there's away to incorporate this into all my wants, that would be great.

Thoughts and help are much appreciated.

Re: Help me decide - Strollers

  • Here is what I have to suit my need to be freely mobile over terrain and lightweight as possible:

snap n-go which has been a lifesaver during these first few months.  I have the Chicco car seat and SNG ($100).  So easy to fold/unfold and weights 10 pounds - featherweight

BOB for jogging and walking on dirt roads (~$350).  I've been walking with DD since 1 week and running with DD since 10 weeks - I just use the car seat adapter.

UppaBaby G-Luxe ($189) for my umbrella stroller.  It is the lightest one I found that reclines.  Can be used from 3 months, versus 6 months for models that don't recline. I love many things about it, including that the front wheels can be locked straight. Just what we need for day-long outings and travel.

I personally did NOT want a travel system nor a full size stroller. I didn't want the bulk nor the weight. I haven't seen any lightweight strollers that can support a car seat. That said, for quick ins and outs to the store I can use the SNG but for longer times when we're out with DD I'd rather her be comfy in the roomier BOB or G Luxe.

I really wanted a one-stroller-meets-all-needs solution too.  But in the end I found that specific strollers meet specific needs.

Ya, I'm afraid this might be true.... But I figure this post was my last ditch effort to try...

    Thanks for all the insight.

This looks neat - I'll have to look into this and see if I can find it in Canada.

We got a City Mini ($200 on sale after next year's model was announced) with a Graco Snugride 30 ($135 from amazon during a sale) and the car seat adaptor for the stroller.  We love it and it's worked great for us.

It meets all of these: compact, lightweight stroller (i.e. umbrella style), that can handle some level of terrain (i.e. snowy/slushy parking lots, grass at parks, bike trails), and can be used as a travel system.

I keep looking at the City Mini, it doesn't feel as compact as I'd like; plus I have a hard time getting it to our preferred price.  Since I have to buy this in Canada, everything is more expensive.  Its good to know though that it can handle the terrain.

     Thanks!

  • Not sure about prices in Canada, but the Britax B-Agile is cheaper than the City Mini, but very similar. It folds fairly compact, and works with the B-Safe car seat. Price-wise here on amazon you'd be looking at around $325-$350.

Wow - I wish the B-Safe carseat alone is $200 in Canada!  Which is why even with the B-Nimble, another $200, I'm above where I want to be price wise.

Still bummed I can't by the carseat and stroller from the US!

  • What about the city mini GT? it has more all terrain wheels than the Britax, it has a compact fold and is pretty light weight.

You would have to buy the infant seat attachment bar.

    And it will run $350-400

You are going to have to pay more probably and accept you can't have it all in one stroller.

I would not buy a travel system. The steering sucks, and its so bulky.

  • We got the City Mini GT because we wanted something (relatively) lightweight, not overly big so it can maneuever easily in stores, that could withstand daily walks oustide (including being able to "off road" on trails from time to time) - and that we could attach our car seat to when DS was small.  That all worked great and I absoultely love my CM GT, and highly recommend it.

With that being said - in restrospect now that DS is older, I actually wish I had just purchased a Snap N Go to use with his car seat when doing trips to the store, mall, etc. (in addition to getting the CM GT as his main big stroller). The CM GT is very easy to use, but sometimes it just would have been nice to have something even easier like a Snap N Go.  And, I predict that somewhere down the road we will also purchase an inexpensive umbrella stroller for traveling.  Again, we could use the CM GT for travel, but my guess is that something even more lightweight (and something I don't care as much about losing) is going to be a better option for plane trips or long vacations.

As for jogging, I think (but I'm not sure) that most manufacturers of true jogging strollers will tell you that you need one specfically designed for jogging (i.e., even though Baby Jogger makes the CM, CM GT, etc., the manual says it is not supposed to be used for jogging/running.)

  • Ya, looks like I'll have to give up on the $300ish price and push closer to $400.  I found the B-Safe on sale for $150, so with the B-Nimble and taxes thats $400.

I'll keep looking, I'll probably continue to sale hunt.  Its tricky, I have grandma wanting to pay for this, since she paid for BIL's, but I worry about sticker shock when she sees the prices (since BIL lives in the US and they bought a travel system).

  • Have you looked into second hand strollers? Maybe a second hand bugaboo bee?
