The wait is finally over! My MT21 results are back and the baby tested NEGATIVE for T21, T18, and T13. And now we know--it's a boy!! I'm so excited! FINALLY I can relax and enjoy the rest of this pregnancy!

hugz, I am SO ANGRY about this--today was the 10th business day (it has been 14 calendar days), so I called the ob's office this morning breathing fire. The girl who did the blood draw promised to get back to me "over lunch." I hung up and spent ten minutes sobbing hysterically in the bathroom. She called me back and said, "Um, I think it's good news," and started reading the report, but she didn't seem to understand what it was saying (???). She said she'd fax me the report "right now." I waited next to my fax machine hopping from foot to foot for HALF AN HOUR. Nothing. Just as I'm calling the ob's office on my cell to ask the ob herself to call me since Blood Draw Girl seems to have the IQ of an eggplant, my landline rings, and it's my fax coming through. I had my blood drawn September 27th. Get this: the DATE ON THE REPORT WAS OCTOBER 2ND!!! They apparently had these %*&#^ results NINE DAYS AGO and let me twist in the wind!! I mean, seriously, WTF?!?!?! I called the office on October 4th asking if my results were in and they said no. I am so pissed about this. When I calm down I am writing the practice a letter. I can't believe the stupidity and incompetence on display this morning. (Sorry for such a long answer to your question.)

I wondered if I was overreacting, but I really don't think so. Thanks. I actually ended up with pretty good first tri results, but I had the blood draws done the same day for both tests. I assumed the first tri ones would be bad and I'd need the MT21 to make me feel better--little did I know! I ended up at 1:474 for Down's and felt like I'd won the lottery. If I had it to do over again I would have waited for the first tri results BEFORE doing the MT21 and skipped it based on the numbers I got. I'm just so happy the testing part is OVER and I can relax now. And it's nice knowing the sex of the baby!

Holy cow! I would be so mad. These tests are nerve wrecking enough without having to deal with incompetence. I am sorry you had to go through that, but glad the wait was for good results!
Im sorry but i'm new at this, what is this? MaterniT2I????
Congrats on the good news! i don't know what this is but sounds like you got some good news! And having a boy!

Don't feel bad, vanilla. The test is new and has only been available for about a year and a half. You, the mom, get a needle stuck in your arm and they draw some blood (2 vials, not a ton). They send it off to the lab and the lab actually extracts the baby's DNA from YOUR blood sample (isn't that amazing?!). They check the baby's level of chromosomes 13, 18, and 21. If the levels are normal and not elevated, that means the baby only has two copies of each of those chromosomes (one from mom, one from dad--normal). However, if the levels are very high, that would indicate a trisomy--that the baby has three copies of one of those chromosomes. Trisomy 21 is better known as Down Syndrome. Trisomy 13 and Trisomy 18 have names too, but most people just use the numbers to refer to them. T13 and T18 are not compatible with life, i.e., you will either miscarry or the baby will die soon after delivery due to huge systemic defects.
If you google MaterniT21 it will come right up for you. I like that this test is non-invasive--no needles poking around near the baby like with amnio or CVS.
