Pregnant after a Loss

Doppler question...baby or artery?

I was SO excited to receive my doppler today from a bumpie that I of course had to put it to the test right away knowing that there's a great chance of not finding it.

Well, I have no clue if I found baby or not.  I knew anything below 120 was either my heartbeat or arteries.  So I poked and prodded and angled and moved slowily and finally got a reading around 160!  Problem is that it was near my hip, where I was expecting to be more centered.  I could hear my heartbeat as well as a faster beat in the background.  I was leaning towards dismissing this as not baby, but the reading of 160 throws me for a loop.  Could an artery be that high of a reading?  Was it reading my heartbeat and the faster heartbeat making it an even higher reading?  Thoughts?

    160 is much higher than any arteries I ever found. The highest non-baby reading I'd get was 135, and then it jumped to the 160s or higher. FWIW, I found the HB way low near my hip, tucked to one side that early too. At about 10w he switched sides and it scared me half to death until I found him! The HB didn't really end up centered for me until closer to 14w. In conclusion, I think that was baby!! Smile
    SWEET!  :::happy dance:::

  • I have no idea I am just in complete awe that you are already finding a possible hb with a doppler. I'm so excited for you and your sweet little ute baby.

  • I don't think 160 could be you (unless you just ran a few miles or something!).

    Was it the doppler counting the 160 or your own count?  We've found our doppler doesn't seem very good at counting the beats.  We usually don't pay attention to the doppler's count (or do our own actually).

    We can tell my heartbeat from the baby's almost immediately now just by hearing the beats.  I also often check myself by trying to do a "1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi" type count.  If I'm about even with the beats it is my heartbeat; if there are more than 2+ beats in the time it takes me to say "1 Mississippi" it's the baby.  Usually we find my heartbeat first and then the baby's so the difference in how fast they are makes it really obvious.

    I know the feeling of confusion though!  When I was pregnant with twins we tried to use the doppler in the 1st trimester and eventually managed to find a heartbeat on each side of my pelvis, though strangely far to the sides and not where I expected the babies to be.  We were first so happy to find them and only after we put the doppler away did my wife say "wait a minute, why was the beat so slow?  they should be much faster heartbeats than an adults!"  We panicked for a minute and then realized we didn't find two baby's heartbeats-we found my heartbeat in the femoral artery on both sides of my uterus.

    BFP #1 9/21/11. EDD 6/4/12.  Twins discovered at 8 weeks. Twin B lost at 14 weeks due to megacystis.  Alice Joe born and lost 1/5/12 at 18.5 weeks due to pre-term labor.

  • Just wanted to add that often the numbers are screwy with handheld dopplers.  Focus on the sound.  The LOs hb will sound like a galloping horse.

  • The readings on my doppler weren't correct until the muppet was ~15 weeks, I used the stop watch on my phone until then. I went more by the sound than the read out. He was super super low and near my pelvic bone on my left side. I did have 3 distinct different noises and his was the one that sounded like a muffled chugging choo choo train. Muppet was 160-175 bpm until he was 20 weeks and now sits around 145 at 30 weeks. It is a bit of a higher hb, but not totallly out of the question so it could be your LO!

    The readout picks up when you move the probe against your skin even so go real, real, real slow.

    You will get good at it in no time!!!

    This. We don't even look at the numbers anymore, we know by the sound. It is our morning ritual to listen just before we get out if bed. It is so comforting!
  • Thanks ladies! I was perfectly still when it was reading, so movement wasn't an issue.
