ER Trip-Super Long (Baby and I both fine)

Yesterday I was in a car accident coming home from work.  I stopped at a red light and was rear-ended.  The other driver hit my car so hard that it pushed me into the intersection.  Thankfully, the drivers in the other lanes noticed and avoided hitting me.  I was wearing my seat belt, the air bag did not deploy, but my stomach hit the steering wheel.

I felt physically fine and was not in any pain.  I got out of my car, got his insurance information (gave him mine), called the police to report the accident, and said, ?I?m 27 weeks pregnant; if I can get my car to start I?m driving myself to the emergency room?.  The police told me to go ahead since I was less than ? a mile away.

I arrived at the emergency room and checked in with the receptionist.  Then, I called my husband and told him to meet me there.  I made it very clear that I was not in any pain, but I wanted our LO to be checked out since my stomach hit the steering wheel.  I was afraid but able to keep my cool and tell myself that our LO was okay.

I was in triage when DH got there.  I cannot explain why, but seeing him immediately made me start freaking out.  I went from calm to crazy in no time.  I started hyperventilating and expecting the worst.

I was moved into an examination room and DH asked if I could be sedated.  That could not happen because they needed to check me for contractions and other signs of early labor.  So the nurse wrapped the bands around me and started looking for LO?s heartbeat.  Longest 30 seconds of my whole life, but she found it.  I was able to calm myself down after that.

I was physically checked to make sure I did not break any bones or have any injuries-all good (some minor vaginal bleeding).  The nurse inserted an IV to do some blood work.  I let them now that I have a negative Rh factor and have not had my Rhogam shot.  They ordered it for me.  I also had an ultrasound so they could check my cervix and make sure LO was moving and did not have any injuries-all good.

Every test ensured that baby Ruth and I are perfectly fine.  I have some bruises on my belly from where it hit the steering wheel and I have some muscle soreness, but that is it.  All blood work came out great.

I?m on ?bed rest? till Monday.  I was told to stay off my feet as much as possible, relax, and lift NOTHING unnecessary.  On Monday I go to my regular OB to get rechecked.  If LO and I get the same good results than I?m off ?bed rest? and can work on Tuesday.

This experience has taught me quite a few things about myself.  First, I?m not as stoic about LO?s health/safety as I am about my own.  I broke my arm in high school and did not cry about it at all even when it was reset.  I?m afraid to think of how I will react the first time our LO gets a boo-boo.  Second, I need to rethink my labor and delivery plan.  I?m no longer expecting myself to make calm, rational decisions while in labor, so I need to have a better list of things I definitely do not want no matter the situation.  Finally, I need to find a way to let myself get emotional support from DH.  He was calm and collected and I had a hard time trusting that he was right.
