For those of you that have flown recently, was there a toy or activity that you were so glad you brought? We are going to Mexico next week and the flight is about 4 hours. We're flying overnight, so I'm hoping he'll sleep most of the time, but I need to be ready just in case he doesn't. Last time we flew he was only 7 months old, so this time seems like a whole new ball game.
Re: Favorite air travel toy/activity
We just got back from Vacation also. First a tip... Straw sippys are not good to take with full. The pressure from the cabin forces the liquid up the straw and when you open it you get a huge mess in a little area.
Now for you question.... Honestly DD was not interested in playing with anything on the flight other than the booklets in front of us and the tray. We got by by getting her to nap most of the time and then once she was up we offered snacks. I had a HUGE bag of random snacks and offered anything she wanted. Ironically we went to a parade the day before and I brought the candy for DH to have for a snack. When DD got fussy I pulled out a dum dum and it was the best gift ever. I know suckers aren't healthy at all but on a flight trying to keep a toddler still I didn't care. She sat and sucked on the dum dum for quite a while and since it was something so new and "great" to her it really saved us from a meltdown.
We also took a walk down the plane to get some energy off and see new things.
I have head magnadoodles are great but DD wasn't interested. Also things like an old parmasan container to put things into the holes can keep a child's interest. Check pinterest for some great ideas too.
Last month, I flew by myself with DD from FL to WA. It was a 1.5 hour flight, 1.5 hour layover, and 5.5 hours for the longest leg. It was a LONG day. Here are some things that I packed in my backpack:
A magnetic doodle board (she LOVES this thing and it keeps her pretty well entertained on car rides, too)
Board books
Pipe cleaners to make flowers and critters with
Stickers
Coloring book and large crayons
Snacks (cottage cheese cups were a big hit; cut-up grapes are also good because they aren't messy; sandwich squares)
Almost everybody recommended that I bring a DVD player, but since I don't show her TV, I didn't think it would help since she isn't familiar with any shows/movies. So, I took a chance and went without it and she did just fine.

BFP!! 8/29/16 --> EDD: 5/11/17....it's a GIRL!!!
Since playdough crumbles so much, it can be a pain on the plane. Model magic is similar and less messy.
I second the magna doodle.
We also used mini post it notes - she liked pulling them apart and sticking to things. She also played with a water bottle for 10-15 minutes.
We don't let her watch a lot of TV, but she likes Mickey Mouse clubhouse, so we had some episodes on our tablet (with baby headphones).
We also had a few new toys for her to play with. Honestly, I'd think about the things that your toddler occupied and then bring those (keep them away from them for a few weeks before the trip).
It went a lot better than we expected, and honestly my DD (16 mo) did fantastic.
