Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Diaper Rash just won't seem to go away?

Our daughter is almost 9 months and developed a rash about 2 1/2 - 3 weeks ago. She really never had a problem with diaper rash before.  Our Our Ped said it was a yeast rash so gave us Nystatin to treat it.  It seemed to get better but then got bad again about 5 days later.  We were told about Flander's Butt Paste by our pharmacist so tried that over this past week.  That seemed to help but it seems that when she goes to daycare (Tue-Thu each week) it gets bad again by the third day.  The sheets they fill out each day say they are changing her every 2 hours or so and when I pick her up her diaper is not very wet so do believe they are really changing her as the sheet says.  I talked to them this morning and asked if they would try changing her more often to see if it helps.  When I pick her up today I am going to ask what they use to clean the changing table after each time as that is the only other thing I can think of.  We have also tried Hydrocortizone and her regular Desitin that she has used since she was born.  Nothing seems to help!  Oh, and no new foods really so don't think it is allergy.  The fact that is is only on her V and not on her bottom makes me think it's still a yeast rash so made an appointment for her Ped to see her again tomorrow.  Possibly a different cream will help?  Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions...... thanks!

Re: Diaper Rash just won't seem to go away?

  • My DS had a rash that would go away a little and come back next day.  I switched his diapers Seventh Generation (chlorine free) and changed his wipes to Seventh Generation.  He hasn't had a rash since.  During the rash, we also used every cream.  The one that worked best was Triple Paste.

I thought about changing diapers as well but since we have used the same brand since she was born didn't think that would be it.  However, we did recently change her overnight diaper to Luvs so possibly that could be it?!  Thank you for the advice!

  • Olivia has never had a long-lasting rash like you described but I swear by Boudreau Butt Paste.  Any time she's even a little red I put it on and by the next diaper change her skin is back to normal.

She developed a really red, angry looking rash when I tried Luvs diapers and again with Huggies wipes.  Now I use Up&Up free diapers and wipes, no issues at all.

  • Pay attention to what she is eating. I'm breast feeding, and when I eat acidic foods like citrus, vinegar and tomatoes too much, my daughter gets diaper rash. She is not eating much solids other than oatmeal and rice, but it's something I have to be careful when I feed her something new.

  • It could be a yeast infection.  You might want to call the pedi to get it checked out.  It isn't a big deal, but won't go away with diaper rash creams.  I bit of Nystatin will take it away in less than a day if it's a yeastie.

  • DESTIN DIAPER CREAM!

    That stuff is amazing.

  • Does your daycare supply wipes?  Mine does (we bring diapers but they use their own wipes), and I was just thinking maybe that could be the issue.

  • I agree with some PPs-  change the diapers AND wipes ....as well, as think about food allergies and yeast infections.

We've used Earth's Best diapers and Earth's Best Sensitive wipes and haven't had a single diaper rash in 6 mo. The diapers are pretty soft- not card-board-y like some other eco brands and I've never had a problem with leaks. You can buy them at BRU or online at Amazon or diapers.com

Good luck- hope LOs bumm is better soon!

  • My DD had thrush when she was 2-3 months old.  The doctor put her on Nystatin but it did nothing and the thrush came back.  Since a yeast infection is the same deal....I recommend using grapefruit seed extract drops.  I would use a few drops mixed water and swab her mouth.  Since your DD has it down there, just do the same thing and swab her area 3 times a day.  Its not medication, so give it a try...its natrual.  My DD also has really bad fissures and diaper rash.  I've been using triple paste and its been better than desitin and other options like vaseline.
  • We rarely ever use wipes at all.. we bought a bulk pack of face clothes and our LO gets washed down with those and on a really nasty diaper.. he just gets a bath...which he loves.  He is almost 7 months old and never even had so much as a red spot.  He wasnt a huge fan of diaper changes when we used wipes in the very beginning and this works out way better for us.

I  agree ..check the wipes and see what they are using.

  • I switched to target brand diapers and huggies simple and clean wipes (no alcohol and no fragrance). This seemed to help a lot.
