All my EBF-ers?

My LO refuses to fall asleep without nursing. I mean absolutely refuses to sleep. If he is sleepy, he will rub his eyes, and fuss, and cry, but won't fall asleep until I start to nurse.

As soon as I start he falls asleep. If I detach him, he wakes up and cries. No matter how many times I detach him he will wake up and cry.

I eventually give in and am stuck to him until he detaches on his own while asleep then I can put him in his crib.

Any ideas on how to help with this? Anybody else have a baby that only falls asleep while nursing?

Any advice helps :)

Re: All my EBF-ers?

  • My middle was like this I learned to unlatch and shove a binki in all at once, but he's almost two and still addicted to his binki.

  • I will definitely try this!

I asked now, because my baby was fussing for his nap and I am literally typing with him attached to me as we speak, lol.

I love him, but I would love to be able to do things while he sleeps.

I do this too.  I think he just really needs to suck and his paci will suffice most times.  Once in awhile I can just rock him with his paci and he will fall asleep but most times he wants the boob.

  • I just tried and he was okay until it fell out of his mouth, he woke up and looked around with an angry face. I nursed and did it again and he is sound for the moment.

I guess the difference between a boob and a paci is that the boob won't fall out lol.

  • Thanks for the assistance ladies. Hopefully he gets better with this. On a regular occasion he doesn't like the paci too much but its better than nothing when he is tired I guess. :)

  • Both of my kids did/do this. I honestly did/do not see a problem with it. DD had no issues with sleeping as she got older and is a great sleeper now. Not to mention they are only little for so long, why not enjoy the time you get to nurse and hold your sleeping baby. Just my thoughts.
  • Ds is like this too at night. I have to dedicate 30mins to letting him comfort nurse until he's asleep. Then when he lets go I wait 5mins and pop him in the crib.
Without nursing the only way to get him to sleep is to sit in the rocking chair cuddling him while he cries himself out for 15mins or so.
    I prefer the nursing
Nevermind me, I'm too distracted by my mini-carrots to think properly image

  • DD will on rare occasion let me put her down drowsy but awake. The last few days she's also been acting like she wants to be put down to fall asleep rather than nurse. Still, that doesn't happen every time and she still always needs to nurse first, even if she doesn't fall asleep at the breast. The only thing I can say about it is that at least it's an easy way to settle her back down when she wakes up at night - I roll over, pop a boob in her mouth, and she nurses back to sleep without fully waking up and wanting to hang out.

It's really tough otherwise, though, because it makes it almost impossible to get her down for a nap when we're out and about. Sometimes I can nurse her in the carrier, but not always. Unless we're in the car and driving, she won't fall asleep in anything unless she's nursed... Consequently, we're either limited to short outings due to her needing to nap every 90 minutes, or we have to deal with a cranky baby.

Not sure how to help with this, but I posted something similar to the BF board and some moms with older babies responded that their kids still do it.

Please understand that I absolutely love to nurse and sleep with my baby. We co-sleep and I EBF so I have absolutely no issue holding him. Its just a hassle that he wakes up as soon as I stop nursing even in his deepest sleep. It hinders me from getting other things done which I don't mind too much but it also results in him being quite cranky if he doesn't get his .

I would just like him to be a bit independent when he sleeps so that he can rest easily and I can finally do laundry :)

  • I have to leave my LO on for 20-25 min after she's stopped actively nursing (really sucking it down).  That works most of the time. That said, she doesn't really sleep well in crib, she does better on memory foam mattress (mine) that is closer to feeling of being on a person.

The other way to get her down is wearing her (baby sling).  Dr Sears excellent Baby Book talks about this.

    Good luck!
