Elijah Jay's Birth Story (PIP)

I live one hour from my OB and the hospital I delivered yet. On Friday October 5th I had a 10:30 Doctor?s appointment and since I had the day off and our cat needed to go to the vet I figured I would get that done. My parents told me I could leave the cat at their house (they live 15 minutes from the hospital) during my appointment.

So, I am in the car driving to my parents with the cat when I noticed a disgusting smell. The cat had pooped in his cat carrier. I hadn?t left myself a lot of time to drop off the cat and get to my appointment. I knew I was going to have to get the cat cleaned up at my parents. When I got there I had ten minutes before I had to leave for my appointment. I also really needed to pee. I ran in, grabbed my mother?s gloves for doing the dishes, a towel, and headed into the bathroom with the cat carrier. The moment I set it down I felt a gush (10am). At first I thought I had peed myself, but I haven?t had any issues with my bladder so I wasn?t sure. When I smelled my undies they didn?t smell like urine and I still had to pee. After peeing, I cleaned up the cat in the bathtub. I ended up going commando to my Doctor?s appointment and stuffing paper towels in the leggings that I was wearing because I was still leaking.

I went to the Doctor?s appointment. Checked in, waited half an hour to be called and as the CAN was checking my weight I told her that I thought my water had broken. In the exam room she got the litmus test ready, but when the Doctor went to administer it she said there was no need, it was clear my water had broken. She also checked my cervix. I was 3.5 cm dilated and 80% effaced. Since, I am GBS positive I was sent over to L&D right away. I had nothing with me but my purse and a jacket. I was completely unprepared. The packed suitcase was at home over an hour away.

As I walked over to L&D I realized that my cellphone didn?t work in the hospital. So, we amniotic fluid gushing down my leg I went outside to call my husband and mother. After I got into L&D they hooked me up to the monitors. I was having contractions 8-10 minutes apart and wasn?t feeling them. I had lunch, my mom came, my husband came. My husband and I got up and walked around after my first round of penicillin hoping to get the contractions to pick up. Nothing. I bounced on a ball, nothing. At 6pm the nurse told me that the Doctor wanted to start a low dose of Pitocin. I said no. After the next round of antibiotics, I got up and walked for close to two hours. The contractions still weren?t picking up. They offered to either start Pitocin or give me an ambien and start Pitocin in the morning. I decided to go to sleep and hope that the contractions would pick up. They didn?t

The next morning I was started on the Pitocin at 6am. I had breakfast, bounced on the ball, talked to my coaches. The contractions started getting closer together every (2-3 minutes), but I still wasn?t feeling anything. At one point the OB came in and said that my strip looked perfect, but I needed to stop smiling. Sometime between 10-11am the OB decided to check me and to see if there was a pocket of water that hadn?t been broken. Sure enough there was. About half an hour later I started feeling contractions that I couldn?t distract myself from. 2 hours later I needed my coaches to help me breathe through them. Shortly after that I started vomiting and shaking uncontrollably. I kept saying that I felt like I needed to push, but the nurse insisted that was impossible. She checked me and I was at 7cm. A half hour later I started screaming that I needed to push so she checked again and I was at 9cm. I minute later I insisted I needed to push and sure enough they checked and I was at 10. After about half an hour of pushing Elijah Jay was born at 1:47 pm on October 6th, his Dad?s birthday. He weighed 6lbs 14.7 oz and was 21 ? inches long. He had to be given oxygen to get him to breathe but after that he was fine and perfect. I however was hemorraghing. Luckily they got that to stop, but I still lost a good amount of blood so was quite weak for the first couple days and had to be given iron by IV.
