Food Allergy

allergic to almost everything?

My son gets rashes 1-5 times a week.  We have been cutting everything that he gets a rash after and are down to sweet potato and green beans that he can eat.  The dr said to keep giving him things that give him rashes to try to build up his tolerance but it's hard for me to do, even though the rashes don't seem to bother him at all.  She did say it could be a sign that he is going to have severe allergies and gave us an epipen just in case.  Anyone else dealt with this?  Does it get better!  I'm afraid he's not going to be able to eat anything!

Re: allergic to almost everything?

  • No offense but that advice does not seem right. My pedi GI said that if a food gives my LO a rash to stop giving the food for at least 2 months and then re-introduce.

Have you seen a pediatric GI? They are often MUCH better at working with infant allergies than pediatricians. Also, are you keeping a food journal to keep track of the dates and the reactions?

Are you bfing or formula? Is it possible that your son is reacting to that rather than the food you are giving him?

I was thinking about getting another opinion because I wasn't sure I liked the sound of it either.  I didn't know who to take him to, I was going to find another pediatrician, but you think a pediatric gi?  I haven't been keeping a journal but I will start doing that!

He is on formula now entirely and has been supplementing since 1 day old.  We did switch from similac to enfamil at about 4 month, but the rashes started after he started food at about 4.5 months.  My husband did say maybe we should try a different formula since it seems to be so frequent of an occurance that I'm not entirely convinced it is food related at all.

How are his stools? Have you noticed any blood or lots of mucus? Those are signs of food intolerances which can be transported from formula.

If you have the ability to see a pediatric GI I would try to make an appointment. They really know how infant tummies work. Since allergy testing an infant is usually inconclusive the GI will probably be a better option than a regular pedi.

With an infant reaction it is usually really hard to pin point the cause. I would make an appointment and then see what they recommend. In the time being, I would offer 1 food every 3 days. Start with baby oatmeal and then go to sweet potatoes, apples, squash, etc. Waiting 3 to 4 days before starting a new food allows you to see a reaction and for you to narrow down what it may be from.

And I would probably keep him on the same formula for now to see if it really is a food reaction. If he has rashes from everything if could be something in the formula rather than the food.

    Good luck!

His stools have been getting thicker.  I would say not quite as solid as pb yet though.  He does poo 1-3 times a day though.  I have not noticed any blood or mucous.  He does seem to be getting a bit constipated though.

I have been introducting things for 3-5 days to see if it was new foods, but most things didn't start having a reaction until some random time later (which is why I question food, but they start generally after he eats).  Like squash.  He had been tested for squash and really liked it, in fact it was one of 3 that he seemed to be able to eat no problem, then last week, bam bad bad rash after two meals of squash.  So if it is food he isn't always getting a reaction in the first few days.  I just wish I knew what is going on so I could make it better!

  • They gave you an epipen without doing tests? go get a second opinion. Go to a real pedi allergist. Did you keep a journal? do you nurse him?  if not, what formula do you use? The last thing i would do is keep giving him things that give him rashes. He's so young and obviously something is not agreeing with him.

EDIT - i see pp already mentioned most of this.  I agree with pp, go see a GI or an allergist and get real tests done.  My son was tested at 7 months so if someone tells you you have to wait, demand to get tested or go to someone else.

I also agree, change to hyperallergenic formula.  Avoid top 8 (milk/soy/eggs/peanuts/treenuts/fish/shellfish/wheat) and even sesame.  Go totally basic with his diet... at his age you can just do simple foods

good luck! hope you get some answers.

btw -is the rash raised, bumpy, itchy???

  • Defianetely get another opinion! My son was breaking out in a rash at four months old and they did a RAST blood test that indicated what he is allergic too. Granted, they can't test for everything at that age, but it's a start! Have you changed any lotions, soaps, or detergents??

Agreed -- something does not seem right with your pedi's reccomendations.  DD was first tested at only 4 months old.
