Infertility

What's a long enough IVF break?

I went through IVF last year and became pregnant with twins. Sadly I lost my babies at 18 weeks due to preterm labor. After a hysteroscopy to remove scar tissue from the pregnancy, I went through a FET (BFN) followed immediately by a fresh IVF cycle (BFN). That cycle ended at the end of June.

DH & I decided to take an emotional break since then and found a new RE as well. This RE thinks I am perfectly normal and should be able to conceive on my own. Upon her recommendation we just went through an unmedicated IUI.

I don't yet know if it worked but I'm not overly hopeful as life has not been kind to us in this area :( I guess I am just thinking ahead, but I would consider trying one more, possibly 2 more IUI's with her before returning to IVF again. According to my new RE I shouldn't HAVE to go through IVF but the reality is, there is only so much I can take and at least with IVF I know my odds of becoming pregnant are much higher.

I was just wondering, WHAT'S A LONG ENOUGH BREAK? I know most RE's will say a cycle or two, but let's be honest, it's pretty hard on your body. If I decide to return to IVF I want to know that I gave my body a decent "rest". Any opinions on what is a long enough amount of time?

Thanks in advance for your feedback...

Re: What's a long enough IVF break?

  • If you look at my list below...I don't take many breaks! I think it mainly comes down to when you are ready. I am so sorry for your loss! How heartbreaking. I haven't had any losses so I can't relate to that but as difficult as a negative result is taking time off from fertility treatments is just as hard. I should be able to get pregnant on my own but it just isn't working. Either did the 3 rounds of IUI or a fresh and frozen IVF. I did my first IVF in June, the frozen cycle in August and getting ready to do another fresh in November (we purchased a package). In between those months I have been on bcp to get ready for the next cycle so it can't happen on its own and I feel like I am wasting months! My ultrasounds and bloodwork look normal in between so all the meds haven't seem to affect anything so emotionally I am ready to just get this done. So I think if you are being properly monitored and the meds are not messing up any of your natural cycles that follow the meds, then it is just when you are ready! But that is just one person's opinion :)

  • This is a really good question, and I'm so sorry for all you've been through!  I had a failed IVF in April and I THOUGHT I was going to jump right back in, but once it was time to start another cycle I pulled out at the last minute.  I just didn't feel ready.  Now I'm planning a new cycle in January, which is a really long wait (eight months), I know, but I think I needed it.

    The funny thing is that I only had one natural period in the four months after the IVF.  I feel like my interest in starting a new cycle really kicked in after I started getting my period regularly again.

    So I guess I'm trying to say that I think it's different for everybody, and that listening to your instincts is the best way to go. Now that I think about it, a four to five month wait would have been ideal for me, but we're waiting a little longer for financial and insurance reasons.  I know I will REALLY be ready in January!

    Me = 37, PCOS DH = 43, low-ish morphology
    IUI #1 (Clomid), 3/11 = BFN

    Planning for IVF #2 in January 2013.
    Everybody welcome.
  • I don't think there's any set amount of break time. You have to do it when you & DH are ready again.  My RE waits a cycle between each ivf attempt.  Personally, I would have gone again immediately, instead of waiting for Dec(next available cycle).  But after talking about it with my DH, we decided to take a break after that if the Dec cycle fails.
