bottle sterilizer

Are they really necessary?  None of my bottles say that they need to be sterilized, but hand washing or dishwasher safe.  I have Dr. Browns and Tommy Tippee.  Thanks!

I'm about to be a FTM, so I am not speaking from experience but it is my opinion that they are not necessary. You can get by without one. Running your bottles through the dishwasher should sterilize them as long as the temp of the water gets high enough. On a thread from yesterday someone mentioned using the "sani rinse" option on your dishwasher also to help with it. I would also think that boiling them in water would be effective. I plan to just run mine through the dishwasher before the first use and hand wash thereafter.

This is what I was thinking also, but wanted to make sure I was on the right track lol.

  • I do have one and have used it quite a bit. I do sterilize my bottles prior to the first use. A lot of times in the directions it does state to do this. I also like to sterilize my pacifies and pump parts every so often.

I dont sterilize my bottles after every use. I do hand wash them and sterilize every two weeks or so. I found that when I put my bottles in the dishwasher they weren't very clean. I could still see milk residue.

  • Not necessary. I know I've bought several different brands of bottles over the years and each specified to sterilize in boiling water prior to first use and not to sterilize multiple times. If you sterilize more than they say you may release toxins into the bottles, so I follow instructions.

Until this summer we haven't had a dishwasher, so I handwashed all bottles and pump parts, with this baby we'll run stuff through the dishwasher.

  • Medela sells steam bags and they are amazing. I sterilized all the bottles and parts, pacis and some toys I bought used when I first got them but only once every other month or so since then. The bags are great becuz they fold up and are easy to store. You can use each 20 tines I think it has a checkmark system on the back so u know how many uses are left... and the box came with 5 bags for like 8. Definitely the best way to go.for sterilizing imo

  • I found it to be rather useless.  I've used mine a total of 2 times.  I also have some medela steam bags which I never use.  There really isn't a medical reason to sterilize bottles unless you have a premie.

  • I sterilized bottles and pacifiers when I first bought them (out of the package), but you can just drop them in boiling water for a couple minutes (the package will tell you how long).  I only did it that first time, then used the dishwasher to wash them everytime after that.  I used Dr Browns too, and used a Munchkin DW basket to hold all the little parts).  My DW does have a sani-rinse cycle that I would also set to run after the normal wash. I'd maybe suggest doing the boiling water sanitize thing after that only if your LO had some nasty virus.

I don't think you need to buy any special sterilizer equipment.  Just a pot on your stovetop works fine!

  • It's a waste of money IMO. I would just soak them in hot water or use the dishwasher.
