Hands falling asleep during the night?

I have been having this weird pregnancy symptom. During the night, I wake up 2-3 times (usually to pee) and both of my hands are completely numb and "asleep!" I shake them and they begin to "wake up" and sting like pins and needles - ow! This has only happened the last few weeks no matter what position I sleep in. I googled this and apparently being pregnant can cause carpal tunnel or make existing carpal tunnel worse!

I am going to ask my OB about this tomorrow at my first appointment, but I just wanted to see if any of you have or have had this symptom? I read that some women even need to wear arm/wrist braces at night! :-/ (Wow, they really don't want us to sleep!)

Re: Hands falling asleep during the night?

  • I had it with my first. It's carpal tunnel. I had to end up wearing braces on both wrists at night and occasionally during the day. It completely went away after delivery. It's coming back now however- boo!!

  • I had this problem when pregnant with my daughter and I've started having it again with this pregnancy. My midwife said it's carpal tunnel and normal. By the end of my pregnancy my fingertips on both hands were always numb. It all went away after baby was born.

  • Thank god I'm not the only one!  I thought it was related to my migraines or something, but now I am much less freaked out.  If it gets much worse, I may need to consider those braces.  Thank you, OP, for sharing and thanks everyone else for the reassurance!

  • I have had this issue, except it's with my entire arms.  I wonder if there might be a circulation issue, with more blood going to the baby area?
  • I've had that a few times, but I just figured I fell asleep with my hand under my head.  It's always only one hand at a time.  But I do spend all the time on the computer so I'll have to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't develop into CTS.

Talk to your OB about massage. Carpal tunnel holds it's root in your back. Keeping the muscles relaxed and unknotted can greatly reduce symptoms, and it's more effective than just immobilizing the hands and wrists.

Interesting! I will have to check that out!

Thank you all for your input - its reassuring to see that this isn't an isolated incident even though I'm sad to see others have numb hands- boo! BTW, my 1st appointment went great! Strong heartbeat and measuring ahead! Yay!  Doc said the same as you all, capable tunnel and I can let her know if it gets worse.
