Sorry if this is not the right place to post this but I'm not sure if the main boards will have dealt with this issue. My daughter is pigeon toed and since it has not corrected itself by her 3rd birthday her Pedi recommended I see a Pediatric Orthopedist. I did and he told me that my daughter has both a Tibial and a Femoral Torsion and that it's pretty extreme. She can literally turn her feet backwards and I honestly didn't think it was that bad.
I got very upset and started tearing up since it caught me off guard. He said she should wear a Denis Browne Splint at night. I went home and researched and many websites say that this treatment is not going to help her condition, many others say it will.
Does anyone have any experience with this they can share? Thanks!
Re: XP: Intoeing (Pigeon Toed)
My son suffers from intoeing and he's also approaching his 3rd birthday.
Initially he had very bowed legs - they were striking to look at but his pediatric orthopedist said that with time the legs would straighten. We started seeing him when DS was 10 months. He turns 3 in 4 weeks and his legs are as straight as any other kid out there but his feet continue to turn in - not as extreme as your daughter but still noticeably so and it still always comes up when he gets evaluated for PT. Like you, everything we look at indicates that bracing does not really help. Our doctor told us that in his case, it would be more traumatic than effective. He's figured out how to run - fast - so to me it's not really affecting his day to day so much. Maybe go for a 2nd opinion about the bracing or ask the doctor for more information. In many cases, they recommend them because they might speed up what will occur naturally (might).
Good luck!
Thanks for your kind reply. I am really hesitant to brace her since I'm not sure if it will even help, however my husband outtoes (turns his feet outward) extremely. The pediatric orthopedist we saw mentioned that hers will probably not "self correct" since my husbands did not.
I am however going to get a second opinion and a girl on another board (preschool) mentioned that chiropractic corrected her intoeing so I am looking into that as an option as well.
