Baby Names

What happened to Todd, Jeff, Brian and Jeremy?

Does anyone name babies these anymore?  Do you think these names will come back again someday?

  • Except for Jeremy, I think they're all kind of boring and were overused. There's nothing wrong with them, but there's nothing special about them, either.

  • Eh, they'll come back around.  Maybe our grandchildren or great-grandchildren will have those names.  I consider them on par with Jennifer, Heather, Kimberly, etc for girls--they're all solid names, but they were way overused in our own generation and so we're tired of them.
  • I think some people are like me, where I don't want to name my offspring a name that someone I'm close to has, or if DH or I have some sort of weird association with it.

That being said, if people like Jeff but don't want Jeffrey, you could always use Jefferson.

  • Yawn. Thankfully they were mostly gone with the 80`s.

    This.

  • DH and I like Todd.  I was just thinking about Jeff today -- just Jeff, not Jeffrey.

I watch a little boy named Jeremey -- he's 3.  Yes, his parents thought the 3rd E was necessary.  Not that I care...  it's not my kid.

  • My DS's middle name is Brian, after my grandfather, uncle, and great grandfather, so if it's considered an 80s name I guess my great great grandmother was quite a bit ahead of her time!

I've never liked Todd...it just sounds like a douchey name to me. I don't know any Todds so I don't know where that comes from, but that's the vibe I get. Jeffrey I'm neutral on, but I do like Jeremy.

Agree. This blog post explains the phenomenon well:

  • I love the name Jeremy. It would be my boy name if I didn't have a close relative with that name already. The others are alright, but nms.
  • My husband's name is Brian, and I like it a lot. I have a brother named Jeffrey and I love that one too. I think it's safe to say they will make their comeback.

  • I know a two-year old Brian (he's a junior). It's cute and fits him!
    Abbie 6/6/10 and DD#2 due 2/20/13
  • Todd is my DH's name.  TBH I was thankful he didn't want a Jr. because I just can't picture a baby Todd!  The youngest person I know with this name is in his 30's.

I don't think Jeff(rey) and Jeremy are too dated; I know some kids with those names.

I slept with all of them! Wink Well, not exactly, but as pps have pointed out, because they were so popular in our generation they are a little too close for us to use due to personal associations.

I do know a little Brian born earlier this year.

  • I know someone with a baby named Jeff.  It always struck me as strange to hear a baby called that. It sounds like a 35 year old.

    I actually really like  Jeremy.

Probably about 40% of guys my age are named Brian. I exaggerate, but only a little. That name has been bled dry of any charm and individuality it once had.

I like Todd only because it reminds me of a guy I had a crush on in high school. Objectively, it's a pretty goofy sounding name.

  • God, i wish theyd come around again soon~

  • Yea, this is all about generations. I wouldnt want to use those names because so many boys I grew up with had those names. I heard there is a "100 year rule" for names to come back around.4 generations. So we tend to like older names from our great grandparents generation, because we never really knew anyone with those names. They are "fresh" to us.

Todd, Jeff, Brian, Jeremy, Stephanie, Heather, Jennifer, Jessica etc, are all names that were used way too much in our generation. I dont want my kids with those names. Same reason goes for my parents generation. I think of these names as my parents, and my friends parents names : Barbara, Kathy, Shelly, Debra, Sharon, Carol, Roger, Jerry, Wayne,etc.. so I could never use them. I immediately think "adult/parent from my teens" lol

Yeah. I think unless they come from a family name, they are just boringggg

  • I like Todd. Our boy name is Tad, which is close (though we're using it because it's a family name).

  • I was wondering what happened to Todd and Brian recently too.  Now that you mention it, I haven't heard a Jeff (or Jeffrey) or a Jeremy in a while, either.  And it's been a while since I've heard a Kyle, too.

  • I know a little Brian Jr whose about 4 yo now. And I actually like Todd and Jeffrey. I personally don't care for Jeremy, but that could be because I know several. I really think it's because they're so overused in our generation.
