Do I need to sterilize bottles?

Just bought some Born Free glass bottles and was Googling how to sterilize them and it looks like people are split on whether that needs to be done anymore or not.  FWIW I was only going to sterilize the first time and then just wash after that.  Can I just put them in the dishwasher and call it a day without feeling guilty? :)

Re: Do I need to sterilize bottles?

  • I just sterlized in boiling water after I first bought them.  Never did it again.  I used the dishwasher too for all parts, and I used Dr Browns bottles with a million pieces (I used one of those Munchkin top-shelf baskets).

I'd maybe recommend only sterilizing after a bad virus/illness so it doesn't come back.

ETA: My dishwasher has a Sani Rinse option.  I would press that along with Normal wash.  I think it just gave a really hot water rinse at the end, which was good b/c sometimes tiny food particles would get trapped in the bottles if I didn't hit the extra rinse process.

  • No.  Hot soapy water will do the trick.

I just wash by hand.  For some reason my dishwasher doesn't always rinse clean.

  • Sterilize for first use and just run them through the dishwasher afterwards.

  • I sterilized for the first use, but then hand washed or put in the dishwasher after that.

  • Thank you!  Super helpful -- esp the tip about sanitizing after an illness.  I am not sure I would have thought of that!  And I can't believe I am going to be a mom soon...shouldn't moms just know this stuff?

  • I put ours in the dishwasher, which has a sanitize cycle.

  • I used the sterilizer before the first use. After that I tried sterilizing regularly but that quickly stopped. We just wash with hot soapy water nightly and put them in the dishwasher when there is room.
