Frozen stash and ep

I go back to work next week and I have about 500 oz in the deep freezer. How do I start rotating the milk? Or do you pump to get enough for a year and then wean?

Re: Frozen stash and ep

  • slow down! Your child is still very young and your milk changes to fit babies needs over time. For instance your baby would suffer if you gave them 2 month milk all day at 6 months. Does that make sense?

  • I just added mine up as well and I have 580 oz! I am EBF and haven't even thawed out any frozen milk yet. I have really been weaning myself from the pump bc it is so annoying to HAVE to do it. I am planning on donating mine though.

  • You do want start rotating now. I take 2 to 3 4oz bags a day from my oldest and thaw in frig. I use them during the following day. You want to do this as pp said. You don't want to give a 6 mo old milk that is from 2 mo because the nutrition levels are different.

In my case my dd is 10 weeks and I already have a 2 month stash of about 1600 oz. so I will likely start to increase the amount that I'm rotating just to keep on top of it.

    This is what I do.

  • How do I decrease from the pump?

  • Then why can you freeze it up to a year? So confused

  • You can freeze it in a chest freezer for up to a year.  You don't want to be giving only  milk that is 'old'.  I send two frozen bottles and one fresh each day, but I also nurse 3 additional times.  That means the majority of DDs milk is recent/fresh and I am able to rotate my stash which is also quite large, though I haven't counted it.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • I have about 400 oz in the freezer.  I send 2 bottles frozen and 2 fresh bottles to DC each day.  The frozen milk is from when he was 2 months old.  He is 5 months old today.  I nurse him 5-6 times morning, evening, night.  So he's getting 7-8 fresh feedings a day and 2 from freezer.

That's how I rotate my freezer stash.  Not sure if it's right or wrong.

  • You'll probably need to pump at work to keep your supply up, and you'll send what you pumped to daycare the next day. Frozen is great to fill the gap here and there. But, i equate it to eating frozen vegetables. The real thing is soooo much better. Also, 6months in a deep chest freezer is the max per this la leche league storage guideline chart i'm looking at. A regular freezer os probably okay for 4 months or so. Also don't rely on it too much as power outages have caused many stashes to have to get dumped!
