Nap and nighttime sleep in swing?

Okay so I have two questions actually.

1. DS had been napping on me this whole time for his three naps a day. Well I have begun putting him in his swing awake today, and he is falling asleep for his naps in the swing. He used to sleep for 1.5 to 2 hours ON ME for each of his three naps. Well now that he is in his swing he only sleeps for 45 minutes at a time. I know eventually he will probably sleep for longer but in the meantime is it okay that he gets more frequent naps since they are shorter? Today he will have gotten five 45 minute naps.

2. Since I am having him nap in his swing, and he only sleeps 45 minutes, do you think this will confuse him at night and make him wake more frequently like for his naps? Last night before I realized he slept so well in the swing, he slept for five hours straight, followed, by 3 more, and another 1.5 (So happy!) and I just don't want to mess that up by starting naps in the swing as well. Any experience? Thanks!

Also: He has reflux! He refuses to sleep in the crib, so we had been co-sleeping in my bed. But lately his reflux has been worse than usual and the other night he actually choked and stopped breathing. So I wanted to try the swing (I just did this last night for the FIRST time for nighttime sleep, and it was so nice to not hear him choking) I know they have the wedges for the crib but he just won't have it. He doesn't like the crib yet. Tried many routines and had several sleepless nights.

I am waiting about 1.5 hours between each nap. He starts showing signs of sleepiness, so I put him down totally awake and swaddled, and he falls asleep in about 5 minutes, no fuss (truly a revolutionary thing in my house lol)

This was more or less today's schedule:

Woke up at 8:30

nap #1 - 10:30 - 11:15

nap #2 - 12:45 - 1:30

nap #3-  2:15-3:00

nap #4-  4:30 - 5:15 (woke up after 20 minutes, but went right back down on his own)

Current nap - 6:30 - sleeping now (probably till about 7:15)

expected bed time 9pm??

  • In answer your questions: DD naps in her swing for anywhere from 45 mins to 2.5 hrs. Whether she takes a few long naps or frequent short naps doesn't seem to affect her night sleep, just her nighttime crankiness. I mean, if she only takes 3 45 min naps in the day, she's overtired and cranky at night, but once we get her down, she sleeps just the same as if she napped well. I wouldn't worry too much.

DD does pretty much all of her sleeping in the swing. All naps and all night. She's doing just fine, unlike when I tried to sleep her in the crib. That amounted to no sleep all day or at night. I'll try to nap her once a day in her crib, but it never lasts. Right now I'm doing whatever it takes to get sleep for both of us, and that means all night in the swing. She'll sleep 6-9 hours at a stretch, sometimes 10 or 11!! Even if she wakes for a night feed due to growing or teething her night sleep adds up to at least 8 or 9 hours.

I think she has silent reflux, and the somewhat-upright position of the swing seems to help immensely; even if the batteries die in the night she keeps sleeping lol! The swing is also the only way, other than nursing, that she'll go to sleep.

I would keep doing what you're doing, enjoy your long sleeps and good luck!

I hope this has helped, sorry it took so long to respond! :)
