Pregnant after 35

Intro and 1st tri screening question

Hi everyone!

I?m so glad I found this site. I?ve been lurking for a bit and have found all of you on this board to be so supportive of each other and you?ve already provided me with so much information. I look forward to joining all the wonderful mamas-to-be here.

This is our first child. I?m 39 and DH is 43.  It?s been a long and sometimes frustrating road for us to get this point but we could not be more overjoyed and excited about our little baby.  We saw the perinatalogist last week and even though he said our NT scan looked good, sadly my 1st tri screening came back with a 1 in 8 chance for Down?s Syndrome. But then he called today and said my MaterniT21 was normal?.big sigh of relief!  When I asked him about the discrepancy, he said the screening measures blood from the placenta and the results probably found one of my hormone level s were low.  He said it could mean nothing and that my placenta got off to a rocky start or it could mean problems down the line.  Has anyone had any experience with this?  I?m relieved to know that my MaterniT21 came back normal but still feeling a little uneasy with the new info my doctor told me.

  • Welcome! It's wonderful to have you here! Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I have no personal experience with what you're describing. I have read on other boards that some people with "off" first-tri bloodwork have gone into labor earlier than the full 40 weeks. Others have had perfect, beautiful labors and babies with no problems of any kind. We do put an awful lot of stock in test results, but y'know...labs aren't perfect, and maybe they didn't handle your sample quite the way they should have. Or the tech was having a bad day. Or the machine wasn't perfectly calibrated. Could be as simple as that.

Just out of curiosity, how long did it take you to get your MT21 results back? This is business day 9 after my blood draw and I am getting antsy!!

  • Thanks for your reassuring words.

I had my appointment and bloodwork last Tuesday and got my results for the MaterniT21 yesterday so it took about a week.  My doctor said 2 weeks so I wasn't expecting them until next week and was surprised when he called. I hope you get yours soon! Sometimes waiting for results of all this blood work we do is the hardest part!!
