I'm pretty sure I've seen this mentioned before, and it's not very favorable. But DH has been on this name for a boy from the beginning and absolutely loves it. I can't veto it because I don't hate it (have positive associations with it), and it's way better than his other suggestions. And I just don't have anything better to suggest.
Suggestions? A lot of normal names I love are out due to family members (and I have a TON of them) that I don't want to honor, like William, John, Anthony, Mark, David, Christopher, Matthew, Clark, Thomas, Miles, Noah, and Alexander. I love Joseph, but DH does not, so it is a big contender for the middle name.
Oh and our last name is 1 syllable and ends in -ck (think Rock). DH's other suggestions (I think he was kidding) were Jessie James, Shelton (after Blake Shelton), Cyrus, and he likes Ethan. But it's just too popular for me. He's ok with SIlas. And I'm ok with that too, but I just don't love it.
Need help, please!!!
Re: Honest Opinions on Hunter
I usually try not to use this as an argument, but I can't help it in this case. This is my exact response to the name Hunter.
I love Blake, and I know DH wouldn't hate it, but it doesn't sound great with our last name... Blake Rock (and our real last name starts with a B too).
I prefer Silas over Hunter but that's my personal taste. There isn't anything wrong with the name Hunter, and it's a heck of a lot better than a LOT of the other names we've seen.
Bottom line: if you like it, use it!

I'm assuming he like's country music. Are there any other country artists names you could use? What about Bryce/Brice for Lee Brice? Or what about Brooks for Brooks and Dunn? Brooks Joseph "B"ock has a good ring to it. :-) It sounds totally cheesy I realize, but you could use a country artist name and not have it be obvious. And if you love a name and agree on it, who cares about flow?
My major problem with the name Hunter is that my husband actually GOES hunting. On a regular basis. Like naming your son Fisher because you go fishing, or Archer because you actually love archery. I know that's not why he likes the name, but that is what makes it weird to me.
Jesse is one of my all time favorite boys names. Not sure why but I LOVE it. Not with James as a middle name though.
I like Silas but I like Hunter more.
Ok, yeah, I can see your point. Honestly, that might make me scratch it off my list. Is that why your DH loves the name?

I don't get the WT/ redneck connection myself, but this name is not super popular in my area so maybe that is why.
If you are asking for opinions on the name-- I personally don't like it. I have not grown up around hunting and guns so to name a child after this activity seems weird to me. If it is a family name, it think it could work well as a middle name.
Other suggestions for you would be Dane, Gavin, Wyatt, Levi, Brent, Travis, Troy, Leland, Curtis, Craig.
Good luck!

lol. That's actually why my DH said no to the name. Except he's a cop and collects guns. He doesn't hunt. He was afraid that people would think he named DS Hunter to reflect his love of guns.
And BTW, after reading all the responses (and looking at my own), I realize that Hunter may be percieved as a red-neck name everywhere other than the south. I'm in AL, and here it seems like the red-neck names are ones like Jimmy, Billy, Bobby, Johnny, Rusty, Randy, etc. Anything that has a -Y- at the end of it and can be said with a real twang. At least those were the names of the ones that went to school with me.
It's funny because like another poster above, the only Hunter I've ever known was a cute preppy white boy who played soccer at the same private school I went to. His parents had money, and although they were from the south, they were far from redneck. So I don't really have the white trash perception either. But I did ask what other people would think.
I wish my DH only loved guns, then I think I would be totally ok with the name!
Over-40 parents...what we lack in vigor, we make up for with cunning.
I don't think Hunter is a good idea just based off of this. If I knew you were a big hunter and you hamed your kid Hunter I would side-eye you to no end. Its just weird. Sorry.

I don't take one single minute for granted.
I kind of like the name, and have known several who do not fit the redneck stereotype. the one exception is a friend who recently named his son this...and he is the biggest hunter I know. Deer heads all over his house. I thought it was kind of a weird name choice for him, which sounds like it might be the case for you.

Maybe we knew the same Hunter. Any guys named Hunter that I have been gorgeous and nice. I like the name.
This. I don't hate the name Hunter but I think there are so many better names out there. FI's cousin actually named their two sons Hunter and Colt....and they are big into hunting. I roll my eyes every time I see the two names written out together. Really trashy. I would definitely skip it if your hubby hunts. FWIW, I love Silas.
