Poop (not pt)

My three yr olds poop is pretty much diarhea. He's pee potty trained but not poop so he wears a diaper at nap and night and he's trained himself to only poop during those times. I'm perfectly fine with him not pooping on the potty yet although it would solve a major problem. Because it's always diarrhea consistency and it's on him for sometimes hours at a time, like overnight, he gets diaper rash constantly and it's major. I feel really bad for him. Is this a normal 3 yr old consistency or should it all be more like adult poop? He has a history of constipation that was anywhere from very dry crusty poop to thin that could get around blockages in his intestines. his dr recommended miralax, and weve been taking a very small dose, and I'm afraid to stop and get back into the constipation issue again! It seems we have no middle ground! Has anyone else been through anything like this with their LO?

Re: Poop (not pt)

  • DS is almost 3 and his poop is like an adult's. We've never had any real issues with constipation or diarrhea though.
Have you tried training to poop on the potty? If he knows he will only poop at nap or bedtime, it sounds like he's ready to use the potty. We had some problems because DS disn't want to tell us when he had to go. We bought some potty books and they really helped. I would tell him that tomorrow he is going to sit on the potty and go poop before naptime. Read him a potty book while he sits, then tell him you will give him privacy while he poops and walk out of the bathroom. See what happens when you leave it up to him and go from there. If he doesn't go, do it before bedtime too. Make it a daily thing so he knows what to expect. And reinforce that if he poops on the potty instead of a pull up his bum will feel much better.

We have tried this but it just didn't work. However, we haven't made it a regular routine to sit and try. We've just done it here and there to see if he would. And he tries but there's nothing to show for it. Making him try every time before bed is good idea though to make it routine until he will eventually put it together. He's one of those that is completely content using a diaper. Even when we pee trained he wouldn't tell us he had to go if he was wearing a diaper, he was trained the minute I told him we had no more diapers in the house and he had to wear underwear. I'm afraid to try that with the poop though because it would be a MEGA mess if it failed!!

We threw out many a pair of underpants because I got so tired of spending money on pull ups. He might get upset at that if he poops in them, so it may encourage him to use the potty even more. Although with more liquidy poop, you could be dealing with a much bigger problem!
My parents actually initiated the "routine" of sitting on the potty before bath and it really worked for us. Plus it gives them more recognition of the feeling of when they have to go. GL!

  • My three year old has a kidney issue so he drinks a ton of water.  His poop is very liquidy.  His brother's is more like an adult.  I don't really have any advice because neither kid is anywhere near being potty trained.  I think it's time to talk to the pediatrician though.
