Cake from the bakery, smash cupcake, at the in laws with DH's siblings and aunts. Total of 15, 4 of which are under 4. I would have done it even smaller, but then the siblings would have been mopey.
We didn't do a big party, it was really low-key with barbecued burgers for lunch for our immediate families and best friends. There were 16 adults and 3 babies, including us. It was perfect.
If it wasn't for the fact that first birthdays are a big thing for my family, we would just take off to the beach or something for the day with Gator. Just me, SO and her.
But we will probably do a vacation or something for her next few birthdays until she is only enough to invite little friends.
We are not going all out. On DS's birthday DH will make him a cake and it will be just me, DH and DS. Over the weekend we will go to the Grandparent's house about 2.5 hours from here so we can have an extended party. We are doing a space craft theme in that I bought plates, napkins, cups, and a banner from Party City. He was already getting a space shuttle for his room so we will add that as part of the decorations. Gma is buying a sheet cake from the grocery store and she took one of the plates down so they can do a similar frosting design. There will probably be some extended family there like my aunt and DS's great Grandparents so we may have some snacks too. There will nto be any really fancy cakes, fancy decorations, balloons, gift bags, games, blow up play structures, etc.
I think that it is OK if Levi has an informal party and I also think it is OK if people choose to have big birthday bashes. It is whatever fits for you. I do not think Levi is missing out at all and the little one's won't even remember their first birthday anyway.
Ours will be just L, me and MH, and MH's parents. I wanted to do more but none of my friends have kids and I rarely see them these days so I felt awkward inviting them. The pics are what's most important to me anyway, and L having fun.
Re: Anyone not throwing a party
That sounds very special!
