Hi all!
We started speech therapy 2 x a few weeks ago and yesterday the therapist said that we should consider cutting back to 1x per week because DS isn't imitating or doing a lot of copying the sounds / signs she makes or does. I'm not sure what to make of this and i'm just honestly just crying all the time from worry.
He is meeting all his other milestones but is a slight delay in the receptive (level of 12 months 85% where normal for 18 months is 90%) while his expressive is poor (level of a 8 month old). Granted he just got tubes in May after months of EI's, but i'm not sure that is all the problem.
I talked to his MDO teacher and he responds and plays well with the other kids, and uses his hands and body to show what he wants but she agreed that he doesn't talk as much or at all compared to the other kids in the class.
I'm really not sure what to do here. The pedi thinks he is fine and just a late talker but I'm not sure if that is the right answer. He does make sounds just doesn't use words especially not when he is at the therapy center.
I feel like I am at my whits end and I really don't know where to turn.
Any advice or suggestions you have would be great!
Thanks!
Re: Speech Therapy concerns
She suggested that we cut back on the visits to 1x per week because he wasn't imitating her, and she didn't want to waste the visits. However, after I posted this vent / concern, she called me back and was concerned about using up all the visits covered by insurance that's why she wanted to cut back to 1x per week until he started doing more interactions but I have explained that the # of visits isn't my concern and if he is making any progress then it's worth it.
Sorry for the confusion.
I think your best bet is to figure out how many visits are covered and how many you will potentially have for the rest of this calendar year at 2x per week if you include school holidays and all that jazz. You can revisit this in January and reassess. You may have enough visits in your coverage for this year if you are not planning on adding any private therapy services.
Also, keep in mind your child's listening age. If you subtract the months from his age that you know he didn't have full access to sound are you still behind by alot? Maybe he just needs some more listening time.
You could also make up the difference yourself regarding speech therapy. Watch what the therapist is doing and rig your own system of 15 minutes or so of therapy a night based from what she is doing with him. This should be happening anyway, but I totally understand how hard it is to be a TheraMom. It sucks. If she starts to see more progress from him based on your addditional efforts, then maybe she will feel her time in a second session will be better spent.
