Breastfeeding has been a big struggle for us...on the left side. Roman latches perfect on the right and will drink it till it's empty, but the left side is a fight every time. I often have to hand pump that breast so it doesn't get so engorged. We have tried every position, but he does not want to turn his head that way. On the right he feeds 'football', but when I do get a little bit of nursing on the left it's 'cradle', but still latches and lets go 20 times, till we give up. My public health nurse that has called 3 times since we came home last Wednesday thinks that maybe he has a stiff neck from the way he has been inside me or sore from delivery (2 hours of pushing, ended coming out with a vacuum) and that's why he does not want to look the other way.
Tomorrow is are first Dr appointment since leaving the hospital, hopefully we can get some answers.
Anyone else have this problem? or any tips. If you have had a baby that prefers one side, does that issue eventually go away? I really don't want this to be a problem for the next year.
Thanks
Re: Baby prefers to feed from one side only!
The lactation consultant called me tonight and I told her the issues and what I have been doing to try and correct it. I start with the problem boob when feeding and pump for a little longer on it to try and "catch it up" to the good boob. She said I'm doing what I should be. Give those a try and good luck!!
Start with the one he as issues with every time.
Could be two thing that I can think of off hand. 1 - your milk comes out slower on that side Nd he wants a faster flow. And 2 - your milk comes out too fast for him to drink......if #2 is the case you need to get him to nurse "uphill" on that side......basically he would be kind of choking on the milk because its comes out quicker then he can drink so you need to almost lay down with him on top of you so he is drawing the milk into his mouth as opposed to it "falling" into his mouth. (I've obviously had issues with #2 myself). This problem tends to correct itself once your milk settles down and evens out.
