WWYD: Wake Baby vs Dirty Diap

What do you do if LO just falls asleep and then gets a dirty diaper? I hate the idea of her sitting in her own poo...but she always goes right after she falls asleep and I know she will wake up screaming bloody murder if I try to change it. So what do you do?

Re: WWYD: Wake Baby vs Dirty Diap

  • i always change her if i know she pooped. Personally, i wouldn't want to sleep in my poop so I won't make her do it. It can do a number on her bum if she has sensitive skin. I can understand your predicament though- it's hard to do something when you know it's a sure-fire way to wake her up, but she's got to get used to it eventually.

  • you could always slather her hiney with diaper cream so the acid from the poop doesnt hurt her and let her sleep.

    this is a catch 22 question. :)

I guess I'm a bad mom because I have let him sleep in a dirty diaper before. It's so hard to get him to sleep sometimes that I just can't bear the thought of waking him up. So far he hasn't had any signs of diaper rash though.

Me too.....DS had diaper rash once, but we discovered it was from the wipes we were using (we switched back to sensitive ones and haven't had any issues since).

  • I let him sleep but if I had a girl I would change her. Dark, quiet, warm room with white noise. That is how I change diapers at night so I dont wake him too much.

  • We have the same dilemma. DS2 will always poop and then promptly pass out like it was so much work and he is spent.  But since we are typically holding him then we just change him, hope he's still tired enough, and just the pacifier or rock him once we finish changing him. At night he usually falls back asleep or doesn't wake at all, during the day its kinda a toss up.

  • I change it. If he just fell asleep, I can nurse him for a few minutes and he goes right back to sleep.

How long will she be down for?

That's key.  If she is just going to doze for a bit, I don't usually wake her unless it sounds like a huge load of poo.  But if we're going down for the night or her longer afternoon stretch of sleep, I change it. I also put Vaseline on her diaper area after every change to protect her skin if she poops and I don't know right away.

Yup. My kid goes through diapers like no other. I feel like I'm always changing him, and he loathes it.. but I can't see letting him sit in dirty nappies.
