Ever Used a Personal Stylist?

I see that Nordstrom's has personal stylists available and I really think I could use some styling help to go along with my mid-life crisis. My birthday is coming up in a couple of months and I have told both DH and my Mom (when they asked) that what I want most is to have a gift card to Nordstrom's so I can go use their personal stylist and maybe pick up a couple of pieces. I normally can not afford Nordstrom but I am thinking that they could help me overall with picking out things that look good on me that may normally be outside of what I generally wear (T-shirts and jeans). I would like the experience of having someone pick my clothes out!

Have any of you ever used this service or a similar service? Was it helpful? Tell me everything you know!

You could just start wearing some really awful clothes and we could nominate you for "what not to wear" I really would like to go on there myself, but I don't think I dress quite bad enough Big Smile (even with my junior dept clothing! Stick out tongue

I would love that! All they would need is some footage of me wearing my fishing outfits and I would be flown to NYC immediately! I am jealous that you can even wear Jr department clothing

I have not used a personal stylist. I am thinking if you don't want to go that route, you can always go to an affordable store, for example, NY&Co. and see what they have out for the season, try on a few pieces, and buy the ones that you feel good in. I would not go into a store like Forever 21, where you can really go wrong with extremely trendy items, for now. There is the website polyvore too, where you can check out outfits on different boards and look for pieces that make up the outfit you like. Figure out your body type and google what clothes flatter you.

I have. My MIL took me to a stylist for clothes to wear on my honeymoon (Yup I got a trusseau. lol) it was wonderful. You just share your budget and they help you pick out stuff. They may take you out of your comfort zone but it's still nice.

A few things:

1.Trust the stylist. They tend to bring you things that look hideous on the hanger but look amazing on the body. Because of the stylist I saw I now am willing to try on anything.

2. Ask for staple pieces. These are going to be expensive but you can pair with wal-mart clothes and look awesome.

3. Talk with them. Get them to teach you how to wear clothes and make sure you don't get anything that you don't love on your body just because they say so. If they are good at their job, you will love everything you buy.

What's wrong with the juniors department? Target's girl section has cute stuff and I sometimes pick stuff up from there. Maybe I'll stop when Lo starts getting clothes from there? Or maybe I can just be the awesome mom who matches their kid!

See my post see through clothes. I do find cute stuff in the juniors dept but sometimes it is questionable whether I should be wearing it/. WNTW, says that grown women should not shop in the juniors section too.

It is kind of funny because my hairdresser tells me that if you are of a certain age and try to dress like a teenager that it actually just ages you. I am of a certain age and a certain roundness so junior's department is just completely out for me. Given that, I wish I could at least be able to shop in the Junior's dept if I wanted to!

Thanks for all of your comments. I guess I just do not know what looks good on me especially with a gut left over from my pregnancy and pushing 40 yo. I bought a skirt I love last week that I have gotten good comments on. It works great for me because it is made of fabric that isn't constricting and is flexible for my lifestyle. I also bought a skirt that looks like one I saw at Nordstrom's for $100 but mine was on sale for $23. I guess, since the personal stylist is free, that I will be able to get ideas for things that will work well, and look good, then I can buy some of these items elsewhere if they are cheaper. I am also thinking that I may be able to pick up a few items there that I really love (but probably not too many). Thanks again!
