Downs question

I have a friend who is 27 weeks pregnant with her second.  She is early 30's, so she opted out of first trimester screenings.  When she went for her 20 week ultrasound the tech saw two markers for Downs.  They referred her to MFM for a more detailed ultrasound.  The markers were still there (this was a few weeks later), so she got the MaterniT21 test run, and it came back positive for Downs.  She was going to do the amnio to confirm, but since she is so far along she didn't want to run the risk of early labor.  They did do another ultrasound, and now the markers are not showing up.  She's getting conflicting comments from her OB and MFM.  OB says that everything can be okay, but MFM says that doesn't mean everything is okay.  Can anyone give me answers?  If the blood test came back positive for Downs, is there a chance at all that her baby could NOT end up having it?

Re: Downs question

  • Yes, there is a risk for error with that test. I can tell you my experience.

We had a few major markers with the 1st trimester screening and by the time I had my amnio at 17 weeks they were gone. The only thing they found was that her femurs measured 1 day behind and they said that was nothing to worry about since it was 1 day and very minor. DD does have Down syndrome. The MFM is very correct in this case, it doesn't mean everything is ok because the markers are gone now. There are babies born with Ds that looked great on ultrasound all through pregnancy and tested "negative" that in fact were born with Ds.

I would recommend your friend check out the Babycenter.com board for Ds pregnancy and the Ds board. She can get a lot of support from both boards and the ladies and dads there are wonderful!
