I went for my final doctor's visit before my C-section on Thursday today. I *might* have gotten a bit teary eyed and freaked out a bit (still deathly afraid of the C-section, needles, hospital, etc). I didn't *ask* for any anti-anxiety pills or anything, but my doctor suggested taking 2 mg of valium that morning to help me relax. She wasn't worried at all about it harming the baby this late in pregnancy and felt like that low of a dose was more placebo effect and would just help take the edge off.
I'm so torn! I do have EXTREME anxiety about the procedure, but obviously would never want to hurt my baby. Any thoughts on this?
Re: Valium before procedure?
Have you taken Vallium before? The one time I did (not sure of the dose) I was a crying, sobbbing mess! But then at the start of labor with DS1 I was given Stadol and it was really awesome
So knowing how you react to different drugs could be helpful here.
Either way, it is probably being a hysterical, mess. And the Dr. would not have suggested it if it were not safe or if it weren't something they typically do.
I can't help with the Valium question as I have no experience with it. However, I was also very very afraid of my c-section. It was an emergency c-section so I had very little time to come to terms with major surgery. I hate needles and was also afraid that I would do something wrong during the process that would hurt LO.
I didn't. The needle stung (like they always do) and that was that. But I was a sobbing mess immediately before (because I didn't know what to expect). If I had to do it again I am confident that I wouldn't shed one frantic tear.
If your doctor suggest it then I would take their advice. However, if you are uncomfortable with the recommendation it may create more stress for you. Maybe give your doctor a call and chat with him/her about it.
Take the Valium!
They gave me Valium before embryo transfer and it was the best thing ever. the thing about Valium is that I didn't "feel" the drugs. I wasn't loopy or "high" I just didn't feel anxious.
I have a lot of anxiety about my upcoming c-section and giving birth to twins. I asked my OB about Valium and she said absolutely. Once I get my IV, the anesthesiologist will pretty much give me whatever I want/need.
