Re: finger foods?

  • DS didn't have teeth when he started eating "real" finger foods (not just puffs or Mum-Mums) at about 7.5 mo. We started with soft cooked things like apples, green beans, sweet peas ("pop" each pea first before feeding), yellow squash and zucchini, and tiny pieces of broccoli. As a rule, I cut everything up so nothing was bigger than a Cheerio.

At that age he also liked saltines, graham crackers, and Goldfish. The crackers I'd just break in half so he could hold them and gnaw on them.

It only took a couple of weeks before he really got the hang of it and could move up to foods with a little more size and texture.

  • You can really give him anything.  We started with finger foods at 6 months (never did purees) and my son didn't get any teeth until he was 10 months old!

His first favorites were avocado, mango, and watermelon.  And then he discovered meats.  This kid is a carnivore and pork is his favorite!  He also loves most fruit and goes gaga for tomatoes.  But he eats everything we eat and has since he was 6 months old.
