This week is Homecoming at the school where I teach. Today was nerd day. A lot of the students came dressed in the typical nerd stuff, think Urkel and the nerdy kids from Saved By the Bell. I posted a group pic on FB of some of the nerds. Well, one of my FB friends comments on how insensitive it is and stereotypical nerd day is. So, my question is, is it insensitive? I consider myself a nerd, and I was never offended by nerd day when I was in school. I'm thinking about removing this person because they post things I don't agree with a lot and this may be the last straw for me.
Re: Question about "nerd day"
Personally, I don't think it's insensitive...and I am pretty nerdy. I guess it could cross some line some how...but anything can.
The elementary school I went to always had "hobo day" where we would put on fake beards, tie up a hanky on a stick as a pack and wear torn flannel. It was always for halloween so kids could dress up...w/o the need for crazy costumes. They recently did away with the tradition because it was insensitive toward hobos. what? I'm not sure the last time I saw a real "hobo" but I haven't been on the Oregon Trail recently.

i see your point about if we had a problem with bullies. I teach at a small school (around 300) students, and at least in the high school we don't have a bullying problem. The funny thing is, those students in the picture are in my Calculus class and consider themselves somewhat nerdy. We even had a discussion about how nerds rule the world. I'm going to de-friend them. There's been other issues in the past with them. I go to church with them, so I have to deal with them once a week, but I'm done with negative people.
Couldn't have said it better! Agree 100%!

Good Lord 90% of people who walk the earth are ginormous nerds. I of course am not one of them.
